Leon Snyder Obituary

Leon Alfred Snyder, of Northumberland, since 1965, died Saturday at Elmcroft, Lewisburg. His wife of 58 years is the former Olive M. Printzenhoff.

Born Jan. 23, 1930, in Carbondale, son of the late John G. and Lucille Worth Snyder, Leon was a 1948 graduate of Harford High School, Carbondale, and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in commerce/finance from Bucknell University in 1956. He played baseball for Bucknell University and met Jackie Robinson in the spring of 1949.

He served in the Air Force from Dec. 27, 1950, until his honorable discharge Dec. 9, 1954. During this time he was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Korean Service Medal. He was an airplane mechanic while serving in the Air Force.

Leon owned and operated the Sunbury Credit Bureau for more than 25 years. He then worked at the Selinsgrove Center for 10 years, and the Cancer Care Center, Selinsgrove until 2010. He stopped working at the age of 80.

He was a 50-year member of Sunbury American Legion Post 201. Leon was very active with the American Legion baseball team and enjoyed pitching to the players well into his 70s.

Leon enjoyed listening to blue grass music and traveling to Washingtonville with his wife for dancing and music. He played on the Tachikawa Air Force baseball team and enjoyed attending the team's annual reunions from 1991 until recently. Spending time with his grandchildren was very important to Leon.

Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Garry Benfer, Mifflinburg; and Barbara and Steve Yoder, Lewistown; a sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Wesley "Stubb" Stephens, Lenoxville; and three grandchildren, Alicia and her husband, Aaron Martin of Lititz; Evan Yoder of Lewistown; and Jacqueline Benfer of Mifflinburg.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Elmer Snyder.

Family and friends may call Thursday, 1 to 2 p.m., at the Roupp Funeral Home Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg, where the funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m., with Rev. Dr. Carrie Stine officiating. Burial will be in the Hartleton Cemetery with military honors by area veterans.
