My condolences to the family of Prof Quirk.
As an undergrad in the rival Department of linguistics in the early 70 s I remember him questioning me closely during a summer vac, what was I revising/ studying over the summer ? Being of a far less academic bent than him, I was reading a novel and not studying at all.
Now I regret not having spoken more about language with him. But at least language study has remained a huge part of my life.
He was a generous and kindly person .At that time he had no TV in his home so one treat was to go to his Club at the weekend and watch a little TV. It felt very grand at the time.
