Gerald Graw Obituary

Gerald L. Graw

Port Huron Township

Gerald "Jerry" Graw, 87, of Port Huron Township, went home to be with the Lord on January 12, 2015.

He was born August 25, 1927 in La Crosse, Wisconsin to the late Lawrence and Rosalie Graw. The family moved to Port Huron, Michigan in 1934. He married Betty Ruth Hopp on October 27, 1956 in Port Huron.

After graduating from St. Stephen's High School in June 1945, he enlisted in the United States Navy to serve during World War II. Upon completion of his military service he returned home to work at various jobs which included sailing the Great Lakes for a season and as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He began work at Grand Trunk Western Railroad in 1951 as a brakeman and conductor until retiring in 1992. He was an active parishioner of St. Stephens Catholic Church, and enjoyed singing in the choir. Throughout his life he loved to stay active, and especially enjoyed roller-blading and ice skating, and shared his passion for bicycling with his children and grandchildren. In retirement he volunteered as driver for the St. Clair Senior Center, and continued to work part-time as a very unique greeter at Sam's Club - due to wearing his roller blades.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Ruth Graw; their two sons, Steven (Rosie) Graw of Phoenix, AZ, and Matthew Graw of Clyde Township; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Janet Graw of Port Huron, and Joan Vogel of Rochester Hills. He was preceded in death by his brother, James C. Graw.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

Mr. Graw will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2014 in Holy Trinity Parish - St. Stephen Catholic Church.

Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Port Huron Township. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Navy and the Veterans Honor Guard Alliance.

I am so sorry to read your sad news. I was just doing some research on the Marette family history and came across Jerry's death. My father, George Marette, was his cousin. As young children they traveled between Saginaw and Port Huron to see each other. My dad's father, George N Marette, was Rose Marette's, (Graw), brother. I have a few nice photos of him as a young boy of around 9-10 years of age on a trip to Saginaw if anyone in the family is interested. My thoughts are with you all at this time. [email protected]

Dear Betty, Matt and Steve,
We had the privilege and honor of knowing Jerry from First Church of the Nazarene and at SAM's Club. He was a man of God and showed his love for HIM. He will be sorely missed in this community. He showed much love, kindness and consideration to all. Loved watching him skate around SAM's Club while he worked. We will be praying for all of you that are left behind to grieve. May God hold you tight and give you comfort during this difficult time.
Love and prayers,

As a kid growing up, I can't remember any other adult being as much fun as Uncle Jerry. Us kids thought he was the coolest guy and that perception of him never changed over the years. His smile could light up a room. May you Rest in Peace Uncle Jerry. Thanks for the fond memories.
