Mike incorporated the "Code of Good Conduct" and was one of the reasons why 160m was (is?) called the "Gentlemen's Band". His passing is a severe loss for our 160m fraternity.
Unforgettable Mike, do RIP!

Mike,
I will always fondly remember our many QSO's when you and I were "locals", sharing band opening info, celebrating the good and lamenting poor Top Band conditions.

My first contact with Michael was on 15M on 19 April 1954. At that time he held the call-sign G3HDA and I was ST2GL in the Southern Sudan. In 1967 I emigrated to Perth, Western Australia and was delighted to find that Mike was living in the same area. We became very good friends and some years later Mike moved to Albany and I relocated at Margaret River. From thence onwards we kept a weekly sked on 80M exchanging DX news.
Mike was an outstanding DX operator and currently is listed as the leading Australian station in the ARRL DXCC Honor Roll List with all 340 entities
on both Mixed and Phone and a total of 369 with deleted entities. His success was no doubt due that he followed the DX principles of listening, listening and again listening, patience and extended perseverance.
Michael was unwell over a long period and both Pam, his wife, and family gave him loving care.To them I offer my deepest sympathy.

Listen-up, Mike! Yes, just as you did on Topband all those many years with those great Bazley ears!

Thanks for our first contact 52 years ago when you were G3HDA. My gratitude as well for all the wonderful QSOs in the decades that followed, especially those on 160!

A great many people will continue to remember you & miss you very much. I will be among them!

I hope you're enjoying the "next dimension", and all that it affords... A view of the "F-Layer" from a very unique perspective, quite possibly ?? That would be something to behold! HI!

Take good care, Old Friend!

Mike was my first VK6 on 160. He was just about as far away as possible from Ottawa. How he could hear my puny signal is a mystery.

Thanks for all of our QSOs Mike.

Where ever I was in the world, I could rely on the 160m beacon from Western Australia. G3REP

April 26, 2013

My condolences to Mike's family in this sad time. Mike was "Western Australia" to many radio Hams. I recall contacting Mike through my entire adult life, starting around the late 1960's or early 1970's. We become conditioned to think our radio friends will always be there, forever and ever. Many of us were already passed waiting to hear Mike again, and all of us will eventually join him. Mike mean a great deal to our fraternity, and always will. Very few of us will ever be as important or special to so many as Mike was.

From longer than I can remember Mike VK6HD has been the first amateur callsign that comes to mind when I think of Western Australia and CQ zone 29. This is true for any amateur band, but especially for 160 meters.

Back when I was running an 80 meter inverted-V with the apex at 27ft rigged up as a crude 160 meter Marconi, it was Mike who did the heavy lifting of pulling my weak signal out of the noise giving me my first zone 29 QSO on 160 meters. He no doubt did this for countless others the world over.

RIP, Dear OM Mike.

saddened me , however the thoughts of our many, many chats over the decades consoled me.

I treasured the way Michael encouraged me in our shared hobby of amateur radio, in particular communicating around the world on the 160m band. Having a friend who shared the same passion for radio meant an enormous amount to me.

Michael was one of the most respected and admired radio amateurs around the world for his amazing operating and competitive abilities and for also being a true gentleman and friend – a rare and wonderful combination. I am so glad to have known him.

Condolences to Pam and the Bazley family on the loss of Michael.

Sincerely,

Steve Ireland, VK6VZ
