I did realize John had passed away until today. I am so sorry for your loss. He always had a special place in my heart from the time he first went into law enforcement. He was a friend and a neighbor. I would have never ended up working where I am if it was not for John. He always had a smile, a hug for some and a handshake for the rest. What a delight! Pray that sweet memories will overcome the sorrows.

Please accept my deepest sympathy. My main time with John was during our Chemo treatments. He was the entertainment always smiling and telling stories. Kept an upbeat positive feeling in the room. Anyone who met him was better off for knowing him.

Phyllis;
I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. His cousin Mark told me about it this morning. John was a wonderful detective when I knew him, and a very kind man. I only got to see him once in recent years, but it was memorable to me. I had a deep respect for him that has never faded over these many years. May God bless you richly. Gary Alan Fields

Phyllis,

Connie and I extend to you and your family our deepest sympathy.

John was a true and dedicated professional in all that he did.

I will always remember and cherish the memories of our many social meetings to discuss local politics, policy and business.

Phyllis,

I was heartbroken to learn of John's death. He was such a great guy and will be missed by all. He was passionate about his family and his work but I'll remember him most for his humor and quick wit. He always made me laugh. I hope you find comfort in the wonderful memories and laughs you shared over the years and please know you are in my prayers.

God bless you Sheriff Butterworth and family...and Marion County Sheriffs Department family. It was an honor to be an Explorer there in the 1980s and to have such an awesome, honorable man for a mentor. You will be greatly missed but your legacy of your love of community and life will live forever in our hearts. (formerly Marlene Bailey)

Phyllis - How heartbroken I was to hear of John's passing. What a wonderful man...he and Frank used to banter back and forth over funny things that they encountered and would call each other to egg each other on. I remember after Frank passed away, John saw me at the mall and passed along how much Frank meant to him and what a loss his passing was to the community. Johns words of comfort meant so much to me. John will be missed by the Marion community not only for the impact he made with his tenure as Sheriff, but also for his kindness, gentleness and his quick and witty humor. I'm sure he and Frank are back to their pranks!! My thoughts and prayers for you Phyllis and your family. God Bless
