Crystal was one of the original Humboldt AllStar Cheerleaders (circa 1997). I remember her smiley, bubbly, self bouncing into practices Monday, and Wednesday evenings at Redwood Acres. She had some guns on her... dang what a base... if only she was 4 inches taller?

When she spoke to me about her cancer, she was so matter of fact about it, I had a first impression that it wasn't a 'bad' cancer, maybe one of those that could be 'fixed' with some random chemo and maybe she would loose all her hair and then be all good or something. She wasn't that worked up about it. But over the course of a year or so we talked sporadically on Facebook and I came to be educated by the amazingly graceful and grownup so far beyond her years, Crystal, that the 'C' she had gone and swallowed was indeed the bad one that there was no bandaid for.

What I did get from our exchanges, which were nice, yet sporadic these past few months, was that through all of this, Crystal remained true to her self, her family and kept trying to beat this thing as long as possible. She didn't just give up.

Heaven gained an angel yesterday. They have a cheerleader - a short one, true, but she is a gutsy one I can tell you that.
