Hi Mom. I can't believe it's been five years. I miss you so very much. I constantly think of things I want to share with you only to remember I can't. I hope you know them anyway. I chose to believe in an afterlife where you are with those you had lost, free of pain, and happy. I believe you are proud of the person I am and share in the joys in my life.
I painted something for you yesterday. I used your favorite colors, even though they definitely are not mine. We are hanging it in the apartment in your honor.
I miss you and love you.

Dear Mom,
The last year has been filled with many challenges and opportunities. I often think of how my life has changed and hope you are up there smiling at my triumphs and commiserating with me when things don't go quite as I planned. I miss you every day but am thankful you aren't suffering any longer. I love you.

Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and wish I could just pick up the phone to chat. As the one year anniversary of your passing is here I find myself in thought even more; cherishing the special times we spent together in our lives, but especially those last couple of weeks. I wish we could turn back the hands of time and have you back with us. But since that's not possible I will hold on tight to all of the memories that are so dear to me until we meet again to make new ones.
I love you and miss you dearly!!! Love your baby sister.

Today you would be 60!!! I bet they're having a wonderful party for you up in heaven. Dette is probably picking on you about your age, but remember she's older than you. I'm glad you can run in the fields and enjoy the flowers and are no longer in pain, except for Roland and Bedette pulling your pony tails when Mother isn't looking.
I know you still live every day in our minds and in our hearts but I greatly miss our chats on the phone as I drive home from work. I often still talk with you and can sometimes almost hear your answer's back.
Happy Birthday to my best friend and my older sister. I love you dearly and miss you greatly.
Love your little sister.

Some might begin this message by suggesting today - which would have been your birthday - is a day when I miss you more than usual. But I don't need it to be the anniversary of your birth to miss you: my cheerleader, my confident, my friend.
Last year you bought me cloves and allspice so that when I made Tortiere I would make an extra batch for you to take home ... I was looking through the cupboard to check my ingredients last weekend when I saw the bottles and burst into tears. My children came running to see what was the matter and wrapped their arms around me to comfort me and we all cried together.
Then Em was sorting out a box of papers when she came across the beautiful Grandchildren Paper Dolls you made for them. We cried again. It led us to remembering the incredible cardboard house you made for Morgan and Eli reminded us how much DeeDee benefitted from the greatness of your Heart - how much we all did.
I started to laugh and the kids thought I was crazy! "Mom? What are you laughing about?" "Can't you FEEL her as we sit here remembering all these things?" I asked. "She's still here, in our memories and our hearts".
You had such influence and impact on our lives. You still do. The overwhelming evidence of your love and belief in us still surrounds and supports us. Just as you would want it to.
So no, it doesn't have to be your birthday for me to miss you. Barely a day goes by that I don't wish I could pick up the phone and talk to you. Barely a day goes by that I don't wish I could email to ask your advice or garner your support. Barely a day goes by that I don't wish I could have just one more hug ... Ollie

Sarah,
Your mom was unique. She would rather blaze a new trail than take the beaten path. She lover her students at St. Monica's Graded School and would do anything for them, even if she had to bend a few rules. She did this for our son and for many others I'm sure. She was blunt and honest and that is what made us love her!
Our love and prayers are with you and Renette.
