BERLIN - Rose Vitanos Stefanese, 83, of Berlin Mobile Home Park, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Central Vermont Medical Center.
Born Aug. 5, 1930, in Montpelier, Vt., to George and Eva (Bakame) Vitanos, Rose enjoyed lasting memories of growing up in the family home on Charles Street in Montpelier. She attended Montpelier public schools and was a graduate of Montpelier High School's class of 1949.
In her early years, she worked at the clothespin factory in Montpelier. She later enjoyed many years and friendships as a telephone operator for the New England Telephone Co., retiring in 1993. It was not in her nature to sit still, so Rose secured a part-time job, walking a distance from home to Friendly's Restaurant, where she continued to touch the hearts of many.
Rose was an avid Red Sox and New England Patriots fan and loved being with nature, especially camping at Little River State Park in Waterbury, and outings at Montpelier's Hubbard Park. She enjoyed traveling to Adak, Alaska, Gulfport, Miss., and Annapolis, Md., to visit her daughter while her son-in-law was in the U.S. Navy Seabees. She had a passion for all animals and participated in many Walks for the Animals, often claiming recognition as the largest collector of donations.
Rose was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary, Auxiliary of the American Legion, and a life member of the Fairpoint Pioneers.
Rose is survived by her daughter, Roseanne Newton, and her husband, Dan, of Richford, Vt.; nieces Joan Pelkey, of St. Albans, and Karen Smith, of Jericho, Vt.; and nephew Jim Vitanos, of South Burlington. She was predeceased by her siblings, James Vitanos, Louis Vitanos and Cia Hickey.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Green Mount Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641; or the Central Vermont Humane Society, P.O. Box 687, Montpelier, VT 05601.
Arrangements are in the care of Guare & Sons Funeral Home.

Hello Roseanne, sorry to hear about your Mom. My Mother Pat Washburn and my Dad Rae Washburn spent many fun years together. She and Mom had a loving friendship for many years which ended over something I was not aware of. Anyways my Mom loved Rosie and was sad in her final years that their friendship never was renewed. My Mom passed in 2005. I just wanted to send my sympathy to your family. Rosie attended a lot of our family gatherings at one point of her life and we knew her well. God Bless.
