Brunskill School was a very special place in my life when I lived in Saskatoon. I was there from grade 3 to grade 8. Art Kratzmann was one of the most influential of the teachers there. Having said this I recall that all my teachers there were very special. Many of my classmates have become life long friends was well. Best wishes to all who visit this Guest Book.

Our grade 8 teacher at Brunskill, he would amaze us by catching a hardball bare handed, best teacher ever, he even organized a contest between our class and our parents on many different subjects, sports, math, spelling world affairs and geography. We won all and our parents were very well educated, Dr's, stock broker, Phd. agriculture, mayor, aldermen etc :-). Mr Kratzmann will always have a special place in my heart. God bless! :-)

My deepest sympathy to your family and to all those students who had the fantastic honour of experiencing him as a teacher. I was one of them, the grade 7/8 class of 56/57 at Brunskill School in Saskatoon. At the time I had no idea of how much he would influence my choice of careers and how much of him I would take into my classrooms every day. He lives within every student he taught and each one of my students.
I was grateful to have the opportunity to speak to him on the phone a few years ago as we held a grade 8 reunion.Unfortunately, he had his birthday party to attend and was unable to be with us. Several of us called after the festivities, I introduced myself and said that he probably did not remember me. He replied with a laugh, "Yes, Bill, I do. You sat beside Dave Jamieson, 4th row back, against the wall. You were the stage lighting man in the drama production. We had fun, didn't we." Kinda brought a tear to my eye. He was well toasted throughout the night.
Thank you for sharing him with us!

I just ran across Art's obituary now upon the passing of my best friend from Saskatoon. Art had a great impact on my friends and I growing up in Saskatoon, for me,mspecifically Brunskill School. Art was an inspiration to my fellow students and Me, propelling us off to the future, with no holes barred, whether Bob Forrent's medicine, Courtney Milne's photography or Jodi Michell's music or my NASA research. Art was a real spark plug that made our studies and growing up in Saskatoon particularly enriching, exciting and inspiring. May his soul rest in peace.

Dear Mary and Kratzmann Family, I was very saddened to hear of Arthur's passing. Arthur was loved by all from Australia, and of course there was a strong connection with my mother Leone Grano who passed away in 2011. I believe Arthur spent time with my mother and father in Toowong, Brisbane during WWII when times were different. Stephen Grano

Dear Kratzmann family, I have to say that I am very saddened to hear of Arthur's passing. Arthur was well loved of course by all in Australia, and especially my mother Leone Francis Grano who passed away in 2011 and my father Theodore Paul (Mick) Grano who passed away in 1998. I believe they spent time together during WWII in Toowong Brisbane with my Grandmother and Grandfather when times were different. Stephen Grano ([email protected])

Arthur was a shining example of a compassionate, inspirational and caring teacher--he truly "practiced what he preached"! I will be forever grateful that our paths crossed, however briefly. My deepest condolences go out to Mary and family. May it comfort you to know that Arthur was cherished and respected by many.

Thank you Arthur for your guidance in our Masters Leadership course and with our thesis projects. You have been and continue to be a pillar of strength and knowledge in the education community and I'm sure beyond. I so appreciate the opportunity to have known you and received your kind and knowledgable words. Many, many thanks to you Arthur. You will be missed greatly!

Mary and family, we are thinking of you. The last Masters co-hort that Arthur championed was our group from Kamloops. What a honor it was to be in the room with him. When we tried to credit him with our utmost respect he always credited it to others (including his dear wife Mary). My world was made brighter by knowing and being guided by him during my Masters project with lots of back and forth communication and laughter! I know that others lives were touched as well. What greater honor can paid to an individual than love and unending respect? Though we didn't see each other in recent years he was never far from my thoughts, as you are now. I hope you find some comfort in knowing how profoundly he inspired others to be and do better.

Regina, Buffalo days 1970. Arthur ever fun loving, tried to convince me (at age 7) to ride the double ferris wheel - but no dice. He and Mary were outstanding role models and lovely fun people to my entire family. As I grew, and recognized his talents and important contributions to education, my esteem and fondness and respect only grew. I am a life long learner, and I owe much of that drive and vision to this great and joyful fella!

Like so many others, Arthur holds a special place in my heart. Working for him in the Faculty of Education was my good fortune. We talked about so many things other than work - he cared about me as a person and his wisdom and encouragement contributed to some important and successful choices I made in life. He always had one question to ask me when ran into each other over the years - so, Arthur - the answer is no, not yet.

Arthur was a very special colleague of mine. Not only was he my first point of contact with the University of Victoria, but he also led the process that hired me, protected my interests in it before I was even aware of them, and then worked closely with me with respect, cordiality, and good humour. I shall remember him fondly and with gratitude.

As a young prairie boy enrolled in the MEd program at UVic Art Kratzmann was a beacon of light. Without his help, guidance and friendship I'm not sure I would have been as successful. There are probably only a few people in one's life who you can pinpoint as positively influencing your career and character and Art Kratzmann was one.

Mimi and I are deeply saddened to hear of Arthur's passing. As Dean, he hired me in in 1981 and mentored me throughout my career. He encouraged Mimi to pursue her higher education and was sincerely proud when she achieved her PhD and a Fulbright-Hays award. He was a master educator with zeal and integrity. He was also great fun. When our family travelled with Mary and Arthur to ECNU in 1985, he hosted a "debriefing" cocktail hour every afternoon. He led the "Chicken Dance" in Shanghai on kids' day. He conducted "Purple Rain" on the bus to Suzhou. He told our kids that there were two stomachs---dinner and dessert. Yes, we could go on---and on. What a joy to know both Arthur and one of the loves of his life, Mary.

Arthur was pivot point in many people's lives, mine included. As a newly minted graduate making a casual visit to UVic, I was advised by Arthur to look more seriously. I did and he hired me into a position I occupied for the next 30 years. He was always a quiet, consistent, appreciative enabler, qualities very special and rare in an academic administrator. I am sure I'm one of many who honor his legacy.

Dr. Kratzmann was the finest educator I have met. He spoke to us of Joanie Mitchell and the influence of her words on him. He spoke to us of many things and my reaction was amazement at the way his mind worked. He had a powerful intelligence but an open, friendly manner. I am lucky to have been one of his students at UVic.

I was fortunate to be able to share my deep affection for this remarkable friend and patient. He was always a remarkable source of inspiration and guidance to me and shared his great love of his beloved family. My belief has always been that leading by example was best and he was the master. Rest in Peace and Love Arthur

Arthur was the most inspiring person in my teacher training year at UVic.In fact, he WAS the program. An event which has shaped my career as an educator was his invitation to our class to visit a secondary school "where interesting things are happening"'. The Campbell River Secondary School with John Young as principal was where Arthur and a group of his students from UVic spent several days speaking with students and meeting with John Young. The last time I was with Arthur was at John Young's celebration of life. I picked him up from The Cedars, we reminisced about UVic days, education, and John's contributions. When I got up to speak, I acknowledged Arthur for his many contributions and his impact on many of our lives. My thoughts are with you, Mary and with your family.

As a young teacher, the voice of Art Kratzmann was a powerful influence. Observations made in his report, "A System in Conflict," caused me to think about the responsibility associated with calling myself a educator and practices I might use to support children's learning. Kratzmann was a man before his time; he put the importance of learning before professing. Even though many of us didn't know him in person, he taught by example. For that gift, I will be forever thankful.

Dr. Kratzmann was my very first teacher educator in 1968 at UVic. I have always remembered the confidence he gave me to be a teacher. When my then fiancé attended Spokane Falls College on scholarship, he also studied teacher education articles written by Dr. Kratzmann. We knew he was a man of great and timeless wisdom. His contribution to the educational field was invaluable to my career. One day I hope to meet him again. Until then I will always remember him. Our deepest sympathy to his beloved Mary and family. He often referred to her in class, and it was obvious he loved her very much.

Arthur was the most generous educator and colleague. He was generous of spirit, mentorship, and practical support. He always had time for a story or anecdote, was a good listener, and could always be relied on for assistance. He will be deeply missed as an educational leader, cheerleader, and breakfast partner.
My condolences to his wife and family.
May he continue to guide us from his new realm.
