Edward CANNON Obituary

CANNON, Edward John (October 18, 1924 May 20, 2012) With gratitude we celebrate a life well-lived and of service to others, Edward `John' Cannon. John bravely served his country so others could enjoy freedom, leaving to fight in WWII at age 17. John served with the Princess Patricia Light Infantry as a Signalman in Italy and was part of the liberation of Holland in 1945. After spending several years finding himself, upon returning home, John truly found home" in the love of his life, Celestine "Sally " Johanna Braun. Together the two had Patrick (Donna) and spent their lives together seeing the world and at the center of a large circle of family and friends. In Sally's later life John became her devoted care giver, ever present for her until her passing in 2003. During his working career, John spent many years as a shift engineer at Crofton pulp and paper Mill. John's desire to serve others was renewed in his involvement in local, provincial and federal politics, serving as an Alderman and a loyal member of the New Democrat Party. John spent years involved with Toastmasters International, achieving the level of "Distinguished Toastmaster ". Johns truest love in life was his family and will always be remembered as a generous and wholly invested grandfather to Laurel (Shane) and Graham (Corrine). John left us peacefully surrounded by family. We would like to pay a special thanks to Laura and staff at Cerwydden for their gentle care and to Jill Thomas for her patient and caring company with John in his last years. A Memorial Service will be held at First Memorial Funeral Chapel on Sunday May 27th, 2012 at 11:30 AM with Reception to follow in our Heritage Hall. Remembering John as a caring individual. Growing up on Fairfield street he was a good neighbor and friend to famlies on the street, and a good foreman to work for in the Steam Plant at Crofton. While there are a number of John stories none of them are bad memories of the man. His politcal beliefs were the source of many discussions, as well his time on municipal council are good testament to service for the community. It was a pleasure to know and work with John. Sharon and I send condolences to Pat, Donna, Graham and Laurel for their loss.

My condolences to Pat, Donna, Laurel, and Graham on the passing of a father, father-in-law, and grandfather. What a man, and what a life. I knew John as a kid growing up on Fairfield Road in Duncan. Latter in my life I had the pleasure of working with John at the Crofton Pulp Mill in the Steam Plant. He was my Shift Engineer. We had many goodnatured arguements regarding the NDP. John and Sally hosted long remembered BBQ's for the crew. He was respected and will be remembered by those who's paths he crossed and it will be a good memory.
