Ken Millard Obituary

MILLARD, Ken Ken Millard, the co-founder of the Galiano Conservancy Association and a key figure in the land trust movement in BC and Canada, died suddenly at home on September 27, 2015 on Galiano Island, at the age of 74. Ken leaves behind a legacy of more than 500 acres of Galiano land protected forever, and a strong organization dedicated to conservation and education. Kenneth Young Millard, born on July 10, 1941 in Tacoma Park, Maryland, is survived by his wife Linda Millard, and their two daughters, Beth (Reg) Thiessen and Lisa Millard, and Lisa's five children; as well as Ken's older brother John Millard, of Virgina, and younger sister Doris Spencer, of Colorado. After achieving his PhD in physics from Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, Ken taught in Missouri and at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC. Then he followed his love of early baroque music to a successful second career as a luthier, studying in Salt Lake City, Utah and apprenticing with luthier Anton Smith. He became one of the world's finest makers of baroque violin bows, selling them to renowned musicians worldwide. Sadly, Ken developed a sensitivity to certain kinds of wood and ceased his work as a luthier. Ken first came to Galiano Island in the late 1970s, to perform in an early music ensemble in which he played the viola da gamba. The Millards loved Galiano and soon bought a 24-acre waterfront property on which the family camped until they built a cottage with co-owner Dan Bloomberg. Ken and Linda became fulltime residents by the late 1980s. Ken co-founded the Galiano Conservancy Association in 1989, with a group of like-minded islanders who were concerned about clearcut logging and sought to preserve Galiano's sensitive forest ecosystems, watersheds and coastline. Ken volunteered the last 26 years of his life at the Conservancy, achieving protection of hundreds of acres, including the 188-acre Learning Centre site. Since 2000, the Conservancy has provided nature education programs to 30,000 people of all ages. Ken fostered partnerships with government, business and land trusts. He mentored hundreds of volunteers and leaves behind a strong community committed to conservation, along with a dedicated staff that has vowed to continue his work while deeply mourning his passing. His grieving community of colleagues, friends and family will gather at a memorial service for Ken on Sunday, October 11 at 1 pm, at the Conservancy's Learning Centre land, at 10825 Porlier Pass Road, on Galiano. In lieu of flowers, Ken's family requests that donations be made in his name to the Galiano Conservancy Association.

I have only just heard of Ken's passing. I am shocked. Best wishes to Linda and family. Ken was the best physics instructor I ever had. He taught me that physics was alive, something you could really think about, even at a second year level.

It has been an honour and a privilege to work and volunteer alongside Ken for most of the first 26 years of the Galiano Conservancy. He achieved great things and leaves a legacy for Galiano and all who will gain new experiences in nature at the Learning Centre that was his vision.

What an exceptional man Ken was. He had a scientist's mind, a planner's eye for detail, and an environmentalist's passion for place. He was affable, creative, and when he needed to be, fierce in his beliefs. He was unfailingly gracious, always curious, and had a warm sense of humour. Vale Ken Millard, a rare gentleman of conservation.

Over the last summer I was honoured to work with Ken and the Galiano Conservancy. He was a great man, who didn't worked just for personal benefits, but for the greater good. And that's what he is leaving behind.
I am still kinda shocked to hear about Ken's death.. Rest in peace Ken! You won't be forgotten!

Ken emerged from the theoretical physics bubble of the sixties in an heroic manner. His survival mode was unique, and his life was meaningful and inspiring. He will be missed.

This is very sad news. Ken was a wonderful and generous person, who was the heart and soul of the
Galiano conservancy centre - his legacy there will live I hope for as long
as we can imagine, in the future of the islands. He gave so much to
Galiano island, and to so many people who live there, and to so many who
have visited and worked there. I cannot speak of what he gave to music -
it was only at the concert at Bodega ridge last August that I learned how
famous he had been in the world of bow-making. I also am so glad that I
invited him to this concert. He gave up theoretical physics long ago - and
yet his contacts there will miss him greatly - he was, for example, a
collaborator of Oliver Penrose, brother of Sir Roger Penrose, and I have
sent a message to them about this. I will miss him greatly - to me he
personified the spirit of Galiano, in his gentleness and yet his firm
determination to make Galiano and ultimately the whole world, and
everything in it - humans and every other living thing - a better place.
He understood so much better than almost anyone else what needed to be
done for this to happen.

As a friend, mentor and co conspirator for conservation, I will miss him greatly, as will many others. He tackled difficult issues with humour and grace. He had bold visions and captured the hearts and minds necessary to make them realities. You had unfinished work Ken, but you planted many seeds that we can sow.

Ken was such a smart, strategic, kind hard worker who lived by the adage "no is just an uneducated yes". Truly someone who changed land use law in BC, and Galiano Island for the better. I learned a lot from him.
