I was a Junior at Norfolk Academy in 1972 to 1973 when Mr.Chewning first came on board. He taught me more about soccer and being a teammate than anyone before or since. Thanks to Mr. Chewning, I had a pretty good career at NA and Hampden Sydney and still play old folks soccer with a handful of players he coached. We will all miss him. Pat Devine

I was twenty years old the day John Chewning scored the goal that made his teammates famous. I saw him in October at the Hall of Fame ceremony. I'll cherish the wonderful memories of being his teammate and friend.
Cameron, Gary, and Mrs. Chewning:
We are very sorry to learn of Mr. Chewning's passing. We understand that he has gone through a lot lately. We are so sorry that all of you have had so much to deal with, especially him.
Now he can rest in God's care and no longer has to deal with the pain. God bless him and you all.
Please accept our apology for not being able to attend his service this afternoon as we are out of town.
With heartfelt sympathy,
H.W. & Ruth Atkinson
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with John and his family.
I was just talking to one of my former students on Monday who was telling me about her struggles in geometry. I recalled to her stories about my awesome high school geometry teacher. Mr. Chewning will be greatly missed for his impact on his students and all that came in contact with him.
Much love to the Chewning family at this difficult time.
