Ann Marie Scanlon
SKANEATELES/SYRACUSE - Ann Marie Scanlon, of Skaneateles and Syracuse, passed away on September 1, 2018 after a brief illness.
Ms. Scanlon was born in Albany, the daughter of Francis ("Frank") Scanlon and Katherine (Garry) Scanlon. She spent her childhood in Herkimer and attended the Herkimer public school system. Thereafter, she graduated from Syracuse University. At Syracuse, Ms. Scanlon received a B.A. and an M.A. and Ph.D. in American History from Syracuse's Maxwell School. Her Ph.D. thesis was written about the 19th century American railroad industry.
For a time after receiving her degrees, Ms. Scanlon taught history at a high school in Westchester County, New York. Thereafter, she returned to the Syracuse area and was a faculty member at Cayuga Community College and SUNY at Cortland.
For the last 25 years of her life, Ms. Scanlon was a Program Officer at the John Ben Snow Foundation in Syracuse.
Ms. Scanlon was a passionate sports fan and for many years had season tickets at the Carrier Dome for Syracuse football and basketball games. Despite her New York heritage, she was also a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox. Ms. Scanlon was a thoughtful, generous individual, as well as a voracious reader and an astute (and witty) student of politics and contemporary society. She also had a lifelong love of elephants and delighted in bringing home new additions to her extensive collection.
Ms. Scanlon leaves many cousins and friends, particularly friends she made at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse.
In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the Amaus Medical Services at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse or to the Sisters of St. Joseph in Latham.
Ms. Scanlon's family wishes to express its appreciation to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception community, as well as to Robert and Sharon Bukowski and the many home health aides who assisted Ms. Scanlon in the last several years.
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at 9:30 a.m., in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
