I knew Chas through NASSGAP and he was a wonderful mentor to me. As President during the 2003-04 academic year, Chas was invaluable to me when dealing with federal programs as well as federal policy decisions and legislative staff. Although I often felt panicked when trying to achieve legislative changes with a limited time frame to respond, Chas was always the calming voice to make things work out for the best.

He was such a great advocate for students, a dear and passionate colleague, and a great friend.

My condolences to the family. He will really be missed by all of us.
RIP Chas.

While visiting New York this past summer and having lunch with HESC friends it was a great surprise to have Chas join us.
With sympathy in the loss of your loved one,

I knew Chas as a wonderful, warm human being, a highly intelligent man of many talents. I met him at ACT when we were cast members in the most recent production of Inherit The Wind, and I was delighted to be spending stage and rehearsal time with such a gracious and talented man. I am sorry for all the pain of loss you are enduring, and I offer you my most sincere wishes for comfort and vision to continue your lives with Chas' memory and love to sustain you.

I worked with Chas for several years at HESC, and then he was a guest on my show, speaking about financing higher education. He was a leading authority in the state on higher education policy. Chas's sound advice was offered generously and always helpful. A classy guy, he went too soon. My thoughts are with his family.

My sincere deepest sympathies go out Micheileen, Michael and family.

Chas was indeed a special person of so many talents and he shared those gifts with his colleagues to advance the cause of helping students and role of states in that cause.

He was bright, witty, engaging, passionate and very persistent. He was superbly persuasive and had the ability to get people committed to a cause and become involved. He had been a constant voice for NASSGAP for over two decades.

Although I never witnessed his musical or theater talents I am not surprised and am sure he excelled. He was just a fun person to be around whether it was discussing legislation, policy issues or personal and family stuff. He had an array of stories and his recollection of events was second to none.

It has been said the quality of ones life is enhanced by ones friendships and Chas certainly has enriched the lives of his many colleagues and friends, he will surely be missed.

I worked with Chas at HESC for over 30 years. He was much younger at heart than his 66 years. I knew him to be sincere, dedicated and nearly tireless in his various roles at HESC. There are few like him left and he will always be missed, both professionally and personally. My heartfelt condolences to his family and all his many friends. Know that he is at peace now, and most likely behind the wheel of a Porsche.

I served with Chas on the board at ACT,and instantly found in him a most loving, generous and vivacious spirit. He helped me through some "red tape" that was holding up my NYS teacher certification...I never forgot that and will always be grateful. So saddened to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

This was very sad news. My deepest sympathies to Micheileen and Mike. Chas brought me into the on-going group guitar class he hosted and arranged with Gary Cellucci, a guitar instructor he met at HVCC. My first session was on 6/8/06 and Chas, Gary, George Puzio and I continued well into 2011. Micheileen, thanks for indulging Chas and the rest of us as we inevitably launched into loud, extended blues jams. You have a special kind of patience. I was especially glad to have been part of the occasional get togethers later on when Chas felt up to playing. I recall one particular instance where Chas stayed started slow but became invigorated as time went on and he began singing. We broke into “Gloria” and he was off; it was like current suddenly coming through a wire. He seemed very, very happy. As I recall, he even stayed up past his usual bedtime. Chas particularly enjoyed these sessions because they included Larry and Mike. I was happy to have been there. Bill Wytrwal

With deepest sympathy,

Chas was a student in our guitar class, but it wasn't long before he was showing us how to play. His passion and enthusiasm was inspiring. I will miss him.

Chas' passing is a loss to many people across the nation, like me, who knew him through his work as an advocate for students and state student aid programs.

I met Chas about 25 years ago through The National Association of State Student Grant and Aid Programs (NASSGAP). His knowledge of issues and his commitment to the organization was so valuable and impressive. Literally, his presentations were the key element of every meeting.

Saving state and federal student aid partnerships was his special mission. He succeeded even in the face of supposedly insurmountable odds. As a result, millions of federal dollars were available to students for about two decades through state student aid programs. Tens of thousands of students across the country don't know it but they owe a good part of their college education to Chas' efforts.

I heard Chas say this about others, but I think this compliment clearly applied to Chas himself and was absolutely true – “Like in the old E.F. Hutton ad, when Chas spoke everyone stopped and listened”.

My sincere condolences go to his family, friends, and many, many, colleagues.

Chas was a colleague and dear friend through the NASSGAP organization since the early 90s. He was a great person that truly advanced the cause of state student financial aid. My sincere sympathies go out to his family. Chas will truly be missed.

Micheileen & Michael,
I had the pleasure to know and work with Chas for over 20 years. I have many stories that I reflect back on with a big smile. Whether he was skiing with his family, or he and Michael tinkering with their cars, you couldn't get the smile off his face. Chas loved to get out and know people, hear their stories and reminisce. Chas touched many lives over the years. He was a pillar at HESC and will continue to be missed. Reflect on those wonderful memories, they will help guide you through this difficult time. Don't hesitate to reach out to the HESC family for anything, we are here for all of you. Rest in peace Chas.
