Thomas Hardin Obituary

HARDIN Dr. Thomas Fleming Hardin, JR, DO passed away after a long illness on Wednesday, February 5th at the age of 86. He was born in Jacksonville on September 25th, 1927 to Thomas Fleming Hardin and Reta Palace Hardin. He was a graduate of the Bolles School, Capitol University, and The Des Moines College of Osteopathic medicine. He completed his internship and Pediatric residency at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, prior to moving back to Orange Park. Dr. Hardin, in addition to being a much beloved physician in the Orange Park community, had a distinguished military career. He received many awards for his service, including the World War II Victory Medal, The Good Conduct Medal, The Field Medical and Marksman Badges, and the Master Parachute Badge. He achieved the rank of Colonel in the Florida National Guard in March of 1982 and held that position until his retirement in 1990. He was an inspiration to many young soldiers entering Special Forces. Dr. Hardin established his practice in Orange Park in 1960. He was one of the first Osteopathic physicians to practice in northeast Florida. He was a pioneer in establishing relationships with allopathic physicians and promoting collaboration in order to serve the community. Dr. Hardin, along with Hinson Stephens and Raleigh Thompson founded Orange Park Medical Center in the early 70 s, to serve the population of Clay County. Many an evening before the hospital was established, patients would come to his front door, and he never turned anyone away. He was also a founder of Jacksonville General Hospital which opened in 1972. He instilled his passion for medicine into his two sons, Michael and Mark, who continue to practice today. He served as a mentor and example to many young physicians. After closing his successful private practice in 2003, he continued to practice with Neurotech until his illness forced his retirement in 2010. Dr. Hardin is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Joanne, his sons, Dr. Michael Hardin (Cecily), Dr. Mark Hardin, and his daughters Sue Lewis (Stephen), and Rebecca O Neill (Joey); 8 grandchildren: Melissa White (Andrew), Neil Hardin, Emily Hardin, Amy Cheek, Eric Cheek, Cecil Thomas, Kael Farber, Lyndsi Hardin; and 3 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Ellington Lansdell Hardin, and his son, Daniel Hardin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Catherine s Catholic Church, Orange Park on Saturday, February 15th at 11:00 am, with Father Jose Kulathinal as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Veteran s Administration, or the Wounded Warrior Project. Arrangements under the direction of Hardage-Giddens Rivermead Funeral Home, 127 Blanding Blvd. Orange Park, FL 32073. (904)264-2481. To Mrs. Hardin and the entire Hardin Family, I wish to send my deepest heartfelt condolences and sympathy to your wonderful family. I was a patient of Dr. Hardins for many years. He was such a loving family man who often talked of his wife and grandchildren and his military career to me. He helped me through so many difficult times,( my mothers heart problems then her cancer, my daughters murder. He was truly a doctor and man who believed in treating the whole patient not just what was going on with them at that time. I have never and will never find another doctor like him. He was such an awesome, caring and loving doctor and man. I truly wish peace for you and your family and that God helps you through these difficult and trying days and times to come. Please know that he will be sincerely missed in many other hearts also. If there is ever anything that I can do to help Mrs. Hardin or any of the other family please let me know. I know I will never be able to repay them for the sacrifices they had to make to share their husband, father and grandfather with so many other people who's lives he truly touched.

Sincerely,
Cathy Tippins

Dr. Hardin and his wife will always hold a special place in my heart. His wife and I were decorating the club at Camp Blanding for Christmas and while we were eating lunch I told her I was starving. I remember her saying oh that sounds like you are pregnant. And indeed I was, with twins, who this spring are graduating from Medical School!
I went to the office after Mrs. Hardin suggested I might be pregnant and Dr. Hardin was the one who gave me the wonderful news.
I have the utmost respect for this wonderful family.

To the Hardin Family, Joanne, Mike, Mark, Susan and Becky, It is with a sad heart that I send my sincerest condolences in your loss of a great husband, father, and physician. Dr. Hardin made many late night visits to our house during my teen years when I had many kidney problems and also removed my appendix. He saved my brother Chris's life in the early 60s after he was struck in the head by a metal pole which severed an artery. He counseled me following the difficulties I experienced as a single parent of a multihandicapped child. He cared for both of my parents and was a good friend and neighbor for many years. Although he is gone from this earth, he will live forever in your hearts and memories. Your family is in our prayers. Cheryl Ricker Roberts, Steve Roberts and Cambryn Doran

Dr. Hardin was a kind, compassionate doctor who truly cared for his patients.

I'll never forget the time he met us at his office on a Saturday night due to our daughter spiking a high fever. He joked his pager had flipped into the river - he had given up a social time with friends on a boat to see his little patient. That was the kind of person he was.

Deepest sympathies to the Hardin family during this time of loss.

I knew Dr. Hardin and his family most of my life. I spent nights at his house. I rode to school with his children. If anyone in my family was sick, he would come to our house. They don't make doctors like him anymore. He was a great man and his knowledge of everything was unsurpassed. Office visits always turned into history lessons. I will miss him. The whole Dukes family sends sympathy to the Hardin family.

" I first met Tom in 1961 while working at Clay Memorial. Hospital in Green Cove Springs. We immediately became friends and worked together in the medical field for the next 43 years, sharing good times and some sad times which happens in the practice of medicine in all areas of service to patients. Tom was influential along with others in the establishment of Jacksonville General Hospital and served as president of the Board during 1982. The hospital opened in 1972 and it became an immediate success serving the public. All of us who were fortunate enough to work and serve with Tom certainly benefited from his knowledge and friendship. I considered my friendship with Tom as a Blessing. To the saddened family and friends, we all are sorry for your loss and please remember that you never lose those who you give to God. Will see you on the other side Tom.

Dr Hardin was one of the first physicians I met when I started working at Orange Park Hospital in 1977. When he recognized my English accent he told me stories about the time he had spent in England during his time serving in the military. He was one of those people who genuinely enjoyed interacting with others. My condolences to all family.
