Rita-Bernie was a GREAT guy. We will all see him again.
October 25, 2013
Bernie was a wonderful teacher, administrator and friend. He was a gifted musician who brought out the very best in his students. The relationships that Bernie developed will forever remain a powerful and enduring legacy. May thoughts of Bernie's professional achievement, devotion to teaching and love of family assuage your grief, leaving only his shining star of triumph as a remembrance.

Dear Rita, Robin and Dawn,
I'm so terribly sorry to hear of Bernie's passing. Countless wonderful memories of him, and of all of you, have been running through my head over the last few days. And the memories are so rich and varied - from working on operas to playing under him in the JCC and UT orchestras, from hilarious joint family vacations to the simple joys of day-to-day friendship. May your own special memories bring you comfort and help you through this difficult time. Sending you all my love.

Rita,
I was so sorry to hear of Bernie's passing. I have many fond memories of him from my time in the UT Music Department and appreciated the many opportunities he gave me when I was a young musician just starting my career. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Rita,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Otterbein Portage Valley Homes, I offer our sincere condolence. Bernie was a definite asset to many organizations and we were fortunate enough to be one of them.
It was so nice seeing both of you at a recent board meeting when Bernie was given special recognition for his many years of service.

Rita and family, my great days with Bernie primarily go back many years ago. During my many years in the 555th AF Band we were so fortunate to have him as an Airman, solid trumpet player and also our assistant conductor. When our commander left the unit again Bernie stepped in to lead the band. One thing I do recall was during this time he worked with each of us in an effort to bring out the best of each of us and left the band that had jumped up a couple levels in performance. Bernie was the most influential musician and teacher i encountered in my career. Bernie's warm personality and friendly demeanor was what lead me to choose to attend the University of Toledo back in 1972. Like Jim Depth, Bernie also helped me go on to study with his teacher Leon Rapier.

I was fortunate enough to have a more than 40 year relationship, both professional and personal with Bernie. Although it is too numerous to list all the things I learned from him, it all started with musicianship. His trumpet sound was clearly unique and special. It was a sound to be emulated. His strength of will on the podium and ability to inspire musicians to great performances has inspired my conducting career. His ability to bring his vision of compassionate leadership to his administrative job helped prepair me for my administrative career.

Thank you Bernie for the many years of friendship and support. Rita, I look forward to many more years of friendship. May God bless you and bring you his peace.

Rita and Family,
I want to express my sincere sympathy for the passing of Bernie. He was such an influence on so many in the music world and those that were the recipients of his great talent. Mary Anderson is now accompanying him in the heavenly choirs. It is always too soon to let go of our loved ones, but it is our faith that comforts us. He made a difference!
