I just found Fr. Bernie's obituary notice in the Northwestern Alumni magazine. Spring 2014.. So many memories of the summers he was my husband's roommate at the Sheil (Newman) Club at NU.

Bernie laid the black and white linoleum tile floor in what would become our first apartment after our 1958 wedding. When the 3 of us went to the beach,we could see his knees were red from nights at prayer.

We went to his Ordination in Defiance, Ohio, and kept in touch during his early years in the priesthood as he grew from thinking that God could best be found in the countryside to having a storefront church.

Fr. Bernie baptized our daughter, Crispin Mary, at St. Joseph's Church in Wilmette, Ill., in 1963, and gave her First Communion 7 years later in Terre Haute, Indiana at a special home Mass on our coffee table from biscuits I'd made that morning.

Although we lost touch in the later years, Fr. Bernie and his wisdom remain a treasured part of our family memories, and as Jerre and I pray now at his passing into his Heaven, we give joyful thanks for his long life of service to to God and His people on earth.

Peace and all good,
Alexandra (Sandy) Cline, OFS, and Jerre Cline

I attended St. Ann's and remember when Fr. Boff arrived. He did grab your attention with his sermons. He was not concerned with other's opinions of him when preaching the Gospel and defending basic human rights. He made you look at the status quo and ask "Why ?"
Rest in His Peace, Father Boff

Rest in Peace Fr. Boff. Blessings to your surviving loved ones. I will cherish the fond memories I have, from the school yard of St. Teresa School and our St. Teresa Parrish. Since hearing of your passing I have been trying to remember the elephant character you use to play using your long arm as the trunk. I remember you, at a young age being this tall man with a great since of humor. Deepest Sympathy, from across the miles. - Kristal Brown (Hartman)

I'm so saddened by the loss of Father Boff. He was such a caring Priest to me for eight years (1970-77) at St. Teresa. I have many fond memories of attending Mass at St. Teresa that I will always hold near and dear to my heart. I'll remember you as a gentle Giant. Thank you Father Boff for your teachings. May you Rest in Heaven.

I am so saddened by the passing of Father Boff. I have so many great memories of my childhood at St. Theresa School and Parrish. I still hear his voice in my head during mass reciting scripture. I was blessed to grow up under his influence. May he rest in peace. Cereda (Hornbeak) Blanchard

Father Boff,
thank you for always taking the time to ask me "what's the good word?" thank you for squeezing my hand with your "special handshake" when I got out of line, thank you for the best sloppy joe's I have ever eaten, thank you for your years of service at St. Teresa's, thank you for the stories about your basketball playing days, thank you for not paddling me as hard as you paddled some of the other kids, Thank you for being a presence in our community. Thank you for painting the side of the building red, black and green, thank you for telling me about your marching with Dr. King. You helped make me proud of who I am and proud of my heritage. I was upset when you had to leave St. Teresa because I felt like you belonged to us but as an adult, I now have a better understanding of the things you, Sr. Nancy and Sr. Virginia tried to instill in us and I have a much greater appreciation for the sacrifices you all had to make and I thank you for that, too.

Peace and Blessings,
Norman (St. Teresa, '79)

I am a volunteer at the Claver House soup kitchen. Fr. Boff helped found Claver House many years ago. It is still going strong, feeding people on weekday mornings at the soup kitchen, and providing groceries from the food pantry to the needy in the Swayne Field neighborhood. He was the type of priest Pope Francis talks about frequently, a priest out working among the poor. Fr. Boff should be remembered for the many good works he did for the poor, and the legacy he leaves behind in organizations like Claver House. A wonderful, giving person, beloved by those he served so unselfishly. May he rest in peace. Amen

Thank you so much for your service to our community -- my children were under yours and Sister Nancy direction back in the 80's and you blessed our family. May your family find peace.

Father Boff was my priest at St. Teresa's in the 1970's. He loved his kids and was the father figure to many of us with no dads at home. I can't say enough about his great service to the poor. He will be missed.
