I have been a college math professor for forty years, thanks to Dr. Blakney. He was the professor who taught me math, but more importantly continued to encourage me even when I was struggling to find my place in the world of academics. I will never forget what he told me after I flunked a class with him because I missed too many classes. He said, "It's not a matter of your ability, just your discipline. But you'll figure it out." When completing my four year degree after six years, he called me into his office and said, "Apply for graduate school. I have an assistantship for you."
Above all Dr. Blakney was the man who taught me how to care for students. I will never forget that.
Just learned about your loss. I worked for Dr. Blakney back in the 70's when he chaired the Department of Mathematics at UT. He encouraged me to go back to school which I did. He was such a class act. I am so sorry for your loss.
I am truly sorry to hear of the passing of Dr.Blakney. I had the honor of meeting him through their son, one of my dearest friends, Will Blakney. He and Mrs. Blakney welcomed me into their home and treated me like family. I feel blessed to have met him. My condolences to his entire family.

We were in sorrow when we learned of Simmie's death. The memorial service made clear Simmie's academic achievements, but also his role as husband, father, and man.

Please accept my deepest sympathy, true heartfelt love and condolences on the passing of Dr.Blakney. I have nothing but wonderful memories of him from our days at First Congregational Church. His genuinely warm handshake and awesome smile every time I talked to him were things I'll always remember and treasure for my whole life. I pray that our Lord and Savior will hold all of you close to His bosom during your loss.
Heartfelt condolences to you and your wonderful family. I have the fondest memories of Simmie behind the register with all of the Wall Street Journals stacked up on the end of the counter. His smile and his laugh are unforgettable. He was one of my very favorite faculty friends and I will always remember him.
Sincere condolences to the Blakney Family during this most difficult of times. May God's spirit sustain you with comfort only He can give and peace only He can provide. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Jay T. Hairston (MVCDS '74) and Family
My sincere sympathy to the family. He was a true gentleman.
I shall always remember Dr Blakney for his wonderful laugh and loving smile. He was simultaneously able to give wisdom, guidance, and the space to make your own mistakes to teenage boys. We will miss you. God rest your soul.
Smart, learned, cultured, handsome, a consummate gentleman with a zest for life. He and his terrific partner raised 3 remarkable men, including one of my favorite human beings of all time. To come from the time and place he did, and accomplish all he did...the man was a giant. I share in this loss.
Dr. Blakney has been on my mind for several weeks. I remembered his birthday was the 1st of June and I had been meaning to call him. I am so brokenhearted now. Again that old phrase, "don't put off for tomorrow what you can do today" comes to haunt me. He hired me in 1975 to work in the Mathematics Department and he was a great mentor. He meant more to me than he probably knew. In fact a few weeks ago I placed a note of thanks on facebook to both he and Atty. Eddie Cole for their support and belief in me when I was a young adult. My prayers are with the family. He was proud of his sons.
Dr. Blakney was always an inspiration to me, both near and far. His family is my family; I share the loss, yet I celebrate the life. May the peace of God be with the Blakney family, now and always. Love always, Jimmy Parks
I am both shocked and saddened by Simmie's death. My deepest sympathy to
