PIEPER
Herman R. Sr. 1930-2013
On July 24, 2013, Herman R. Pieper Sr., passed from this life to the arms of his Heavenly Father, following a long and determined battle with Leukemia. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time.
Herman was the son of William and Thelma (St John) Pieper, and brother to eleven siblings: Delores Zernal, Frederick (deceased), Thelma Jacob, Alma Mahaffey, William, Richard, Donald (deceased), Carole Jacob, Chester and Darlene. He was raised in Millbury, Ohio and graduated from Lake High School in 1948. Herm enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves in 1949, and was called up to active duty in 1950, serving two years in Hawaii during the Korean Conflict.
After receiving an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, he returned to the Toledo area, where he met and married Marilyn Vaughn in 1954. They had four children: Joe (Grace), Herman Jr. "Chip" (Marilyn), Cindy, and Melody (Dick) Lucas. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Thelma; wife, Marilyn and daughter, Cindy.
On October 22, 1983, Herm married Nancy Hall-Gage, bringing her and her three children, John Smith (deceased), Scott Gage, and Kelly Barney into the Pieper family. Herm and Nancy loved to travel, traveling abroad several times, visiting Europe, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Canada. Later in their marriage they got the "RV" bug, and traveled throughout the United States. This was a great experience for them since they could take their beloved pets, dog Dorothy and cat Tiffy, with them.
Herm's greatest joys in life were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He especially loved playing with and teasing them, and they relished every moment of his attention. His grandchildren are; Joey and Brandon (Connie) Pieper, Jennifer Stephenson, Joyce (George) Plisinski, Raymond (Jennifer) Pieper, Madisyn Pieper, Johnny (Kristie) Gage, Angela (Jason) Hoosoon, Ashley Gage, Jessica (Josh) Denham and Katie Barney. Herm also had a love of sports. He enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes, and squeezing a Detroit Red Wings game out of the TV at 3:00 a.m. in July. He enjoyed baseball and basketball having played and coached both. His grandchildren always knew when Papa was in the gym or at the field because they could hear his booming bass voice cheering them on. Herm spent most of his working life in route sales, retiring from a management position with Nickle's Bakery in 1995.

When you can say of a man that he was good and that he left the world a better place than he found it, you have said it all. Herm was such a man. We're glad we knew him, Nancy. Thanks for the time you two spent in Valdosta. Dan and Donna Joyner
