"Coach Ursch" as I and my teammates affectionately called Joe was such an inspiration to all of us. His motivation, inspiration and friendship an important time in our young adult lives provided a lasting and positive impact on our lives. His lack of intimate knowledge of the rules of the game was trumped by his leadership and inspiration and ability to get us all on the same page. He was our mentor, a friend, a father-figure, and coach of the 1977 CYO Ohio State Champion Christ the King Raiders who went undefeated our Senior year at 21-0, and lost only 2 games over a stretch of the 3 years that Coach was coach. Our sympathy goes out to the family, especially his soulmate, Marti. May God rest his soul.

To Joe, to Ursch, to Coach...Marti and the girls...please know very few people in my life (outside of family) have had such an influence on my life. But your husband and father was certainly one! He and friend David Shaffer, on a whim, made the decision to coach a boys CYO Basketball team in 1975. Neither man belonged to Christ the King, but that didn't matter. What started as 2 men with no coaching experience, only their friendship, and a bunch of high school kids looking for something to do. Some played freshmen ball in high school, most didn't. For whatever the reason, our sophomore year brought us all together. What happened next was magic! These 2 men, befriended us, guided us, and most importantly taught us how to be better, not just at basketball, but to be better people in life. Those 3 years together forever changed my life. And I don't think I'm alone feeling that way...miss you already coach! No doubt you and Shaff are together again, reliving the fond memories we created together...Distict Champs our sophmore year, State Runner Up our Junior year and undefeated and Ohio State Champs our senior year (1977)... you truly are one of the Good Guys...!!!
