It is the first day of February, 2018. Once again, as they often do...my thoughts find a home in my memories and inspirations that were crafted by this iconic band master on my life. I was curious as to his health and searched for his name, and found his obituary. I wasn't surprised, but I am very sad that he is no longer with us in body. Of course over the years since 1972, he has been with me in spirit so I guess that will not change. The last time we spoke was in the summer of 2012 when I called him on the phone. I told him, "Mr. Kelly, I am moving to Germany to be a band director on an army base. I have taught choir for 25 years." I just wanted him to know. He said, "Donna, you will know just what to do." Oh dear Sir, I did and thank you for that. You will always be my inspiration and strength. When you passed I had just returned from Germany after working at a youth hostel with military high school performers, albeit a showchoir. Dear Mr. Kelly, I have one more chance to be a band director in Sicily on a Navy Air Base next fall. Will you smile on me once more....this time my grand-daughter could be playing clarinet in my band?

So sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Kelly---the CHIEF! I had the privilege of playing in the Symphonic Band at Bowling Green for 4 years under his leadership. He was always supportive of me as a musician and helpful to me as a person. I know that his memory will long be alive through many generations of the students he mentored. Condolences to the family and peace to all. Gary Bales, Bowling Green Class of '74

I am sad to note the passing of Mark Kelly, who I was able to interview in 2006 for the NAMM Oral History program. He will be missed.
