I became friends with Tanya when our kids were babes while on the same park circuit in the Columbia neighborhood. I saw within her the same devoted love that I had for my daughter, Malia. We easily connected and enjoyed each other's company as our kids played, attended storytimes, celebrated birthdays, did gymnastics, danced at park concerts, etc. I assumed that Benton and Malia would be classmates. Though, when a move brought her closer to family, I celebrated with her. Tanya loved Benton with every ounce of her being. And at the funeral today, it was easy to see how she was loved similarly by her own family. I am so saddened for the loss of these two beautiful people. Please keep me, and all of us, updated about how we can help keep their memory alive.

As a former principal in the Bellingham School District, I had the honor and pleasure of working with Tanya for ten years. To say that I learned a lot from Tanya is an understatement. She taught me, taught all of us, how to handle ourselves under pressure...how to communicate and share information, what to say, how to choose the right words... in any situation. I learned my lessons well, but I'm afraid there are no right words this time. Tanya was a truly gifted professional and a wonderful person. She will not be forgotten.

My heart is broken for the loss of my dear friend and her sweet boy. The Kerstiens raised a remarkable woman whose gentle strength made her a role model for so many people, including me. I can't imagine your pain. You are always in my thoughts and prayers. Tanya made a difference in so many lives and her light shines on in them.
