Alan was my landlord in 1973 as I attended the University of Pittsburgh and my boss that summer, as I worked for his construction company building the Kountz and Rider building on Walnut Street. He once asked me if I knew of anyplace that worked on vintage race cars. I gave him the name of a garage (which I can't remember now). I learned of his being instrumental in the launching of the Pittsburgh Vintage Gran Prix years later and feel great that I may have contributed by steering him to that business.

I first met Alan when I was a teenage boy up at his property on Wolfback and he would come to my father's office regularly, always with a chocolate poodle. He was a very nice man who always had good things to say but with Alan it wasn't so much what he said but how he said it. As I write this I hear his voice echoing in my head.

Over the last several years, he had been spending more time away from Sausalito but every now and then we would get a message on the machine and you could tell right away that it was the voice of Mr. Alan Patterson.

You will be missed.

Alan is missed. He was quite a character. I'll always treasure knowing him and all of us caring for him
