My last communication with my lovely Aunt Maria.

Dearest Aunt Maria,

I am writing you this letter with a very heavy heart because I know your health has been failing you lately. I wanted to call you but I was afraid I would not be able to tell you everything I wanted to say or if you would be able to hear it completely.

You are one of the strongest women I have had the life-long pleasure to be a part of in my life and I love you very much! The strength I have seen from you gives me hope that I have learned how to be a good father. Your commitment to Family has taught me that no matter what, we take care of our Families first. Your dedication to this country as well as that of Uncle Carl and my Dad put me on a path to serve in the military and carry on our traditions. Your generosity and trust in me has been unbelievable. I am looking at the coins you gave and trusted me with so many years ago. I will never forget that you attended my high school graduation and trusted me to drive you and Aunt Louise to a local flea market in my old 1965 Chrysler Newport. You traveled to Texas with food in your suitcase because you knew how much I love your caplets. Last year you opened your home to Beverly and I and made sure we left with one of your Christmas pillows. When Uncle Carl passed away and Pop and I came to your house, you actually offered to iron my shirt after everything you were going through. Then after losing your husband you still have had the strength and courage to live on as the Matriarch of your family for decades to come. I want to thank you for everything you have done for my family and your family. Because of you, I have a strong relationship with your children and their children and I want you to know how much that means to me.

I know this is a difficult time for you and your family because we all love you so much. But I also know the Faith that you have in God and the comfort He can bring to you when nothing we say can help nearly as much. Your Legacy lives on in all of us. I am so happy I had the chance to hug you and tell you I loved you last year on the steps of the house you lived in for most of your life. I fear we may not have a chance for another embrace but please know that you are always in my heart and in my soul.

With all the love I can muster,
Your nephew Billy
