Sarah Elizabeth Yeamans, 91, of Longwood at Oakmont, formerly of New Kensington, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017. Sally was born March 7, 1926, in New Kensington. She graduated from New Kensington High School in 1944, and the University of Pittsburgh in 1948 with her bachelor's degree in education. She later returned to school, earning her Reading Specialist Certification and master's degree in elementary guidance, both from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She married John Harvey Yeamans in 1950 and then moved to Philadelphia, and several years later to Crystal City, Mo. In 1964, they returned to New Kensington, and after Jack passed away, Sally returned to school and also began teaching in the New Kensington-Arnold School District. She worked as both a reading specialist and an elementary teacher until her retirement. After her retirement, Sally served as a member of the New Kensington-Arnold School Board for several years. Also, in support of higher education goals for students, Sally worked with members of her high school graduating class to begin a scholarship fund, which gives $1,000 to a worthy student each year. Sally was very involved in her church community, serving as an elder and chairman of various committees at United Presbyterian Church of New Kensington. Sally also served on the board of directors of Pennsylvania State University, New Kensington Campus. She was an active member of PEO, a philanthropic organization, and also was active in the Longwood at Oakmont community. Sally was an avid tennis, ping-pong and bridge player, always enjoying challenging teammates. Most of all, Sally enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, especially at her summer home near Clarion. She was a wonderful role model and source of inspiration to them all. Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Albert William and Elizabeth Grotefend; and her husband, John Harvey Yeamans. She is survived by her three sons, William (Mary Ann), of Parkwood, John (Mary Beth), of New Kensington, and James (Georgia), of Slippery Rock; her six grandchildren, Matthew (fiancee, Morganne), Eric, Shawyn, Tressa, Cedric and Andy; and her great-granddaughter, Maude.

I, Sarah Elizabeth Perry, was informed by a friend, Susan (White) that Sally had passed away, I'm so sorry for your loss. As I read her obituary and I realized my mom, Betty Perry, name me after Sally, my godmother, evidently. Betty & Bob Perry were very good friends with Sally & John, I forgot they lived in MO at the same time, where I was born. And I remember her trying her hand at making Rootbeer, which was very good! Mom & Dad would play bridge with Sally & John along with other couples from the neighborhood. I've lost touch, but will remember Sally with fond memories. I visited her after she moved to an assisted living apt in Oakmont w/ Micky Polaski, many years ago. She will be missed by many.
