RICHARD HULST Obituary

Richard H. Hulst Richard H. Hulst went home to be with the Lord on November 24, 2013 as family and friends encircled his bed. While his beloved wife, Gloria, recited the 23rd Psalm, he slipped peacefully and quietly into his Father's presence. Dick was born in Oak Harbor, Washington on September 24, 1919, the second of six children of Chris and Eva Hulst. During his childhood years on Whidbey Island, he worked hard on the family farm. He was a good student and graduated first in his class from Oak Harbor High School in 1937. In 1941 he went to Alaska to work on a stern wheeler on the Kuskokwim River and drive taxi in Anchorage. Returning to Washington, he enlisted in the Coast Guard in early 1942 where he served until 1945. Dick was steadfastly dedicated to his wife and family. After a war-time courtship, Dick and Gloria were married in Keyport, Washington in June, 1942. This past summer marked the 71st anniversary of their married life together. Dick was quite active in the lives of his four children coaching softball and basketball teams for many years. While living in Keyport, Washington from 1987 to 2003, Dick and Gloria entertained in their waterfront home, where everyone delighted in annual reunions, smelt fishing, clam-digging, kayaking, and sailing. Dick worked hard his entire life and did not retire until he was 83. After the war, he held various sales jobs - selling insurance, radiant heat and check protectors. In 1965 he joined the Lawson Company, retiring after thirty years of service. Throughout his lifetime, Dick was exceedingly active in service to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was personally engaged at Central Baptist Church in Tacoma and North Kitsap Baptist Church in Poulsbo, serving at various times as bus-driver, youth group sponsor, basketball and softball coach, board member, and trustee. A devoted father, beloved grandfather and great-grandfather, Dick is survived by his wife Gloria Hulst, daughter Judi Hulst, daughter-in-law Pam Hulst (son Gordon, deceased), sons Tom Hulst (Linda) and Howard Hulst (Delayne), sisters Evelyn Anable and ClaraMae Schiller, brother Ray Hulst (Sandy), and sister-in-law Rosemay Finrow. He is survived also by eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to thank Hospice of Pierce County and Hospice House in University Place for providing such exceptional and loving care during Dick's final days and hours. A memorial service will be held to celebrate the life of Dick Hulst on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Central, the Church on the Hill, 5000 67th Ave W. University Place, WA 98467 at 3:00 p.m. Remembrances may be given to Central, the Church on the Hill, or to Hospice of Pierce County.
