The Rachmaninoff concerto was the first album I received from my grandmother as a child in 1961. But my greatest memory was his 1970 performance at Chautauqua Institute, NY - the walked on the stage and played the National Anthem... I can close my eyes and still hear the anthem... and my most treasured possession is an autographed picture from a 1970 concert in Indianapolis. Yes, in the 1970's I wanted to be a Van Cliburn groupie. His contributions to music and music education will be missed.
