Sallyann Caldwell Obituary

Sallyann "Sally" Caldwell 2/1/1938 - 4/27/2013 Sally was born and raised in Tucson AZ. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Hugh M. Caldwell Jr.; her son, Hugh M. Caldwell III (Alison) and her grandsons, Jesse and Kevin Caldwell and Max Gardner. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Christy Johnson; her brother, Richard and her beloved daughter, Christy Caroline Gardner, who died on February 2, 2013. Sally graduated from the University of AZ, where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She taught school and would always say with a grin that she taught school long enough to put her husband through law school and therefore she was entitled to stay home and enjoy herself. Sally was a member of the Junior League of Tucson however, her active life was curtailed when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis which, despite its physical and mental debilitating and demoralizing affects, she endured it with a smile and grace and she was an inspiration to everyone she came in contact with. Sally was a loyal U of A Basketball fan and attended all the games until her MS made it impossible for her to navigate through the crowds and steps. She loved her cabin in Pinetop, especially when the family was able to spend the summers there and she could sit on the deck looking at her flower garden and watching all the hummingbirds chasing other birds away from their feeders. The family extends its deepest appreciation and love to Sally's caregiver, Sue Zielinski, who for the last ten years filled Sally's world with fun and laughter. Sue became Sally's sister and there was nothing Sue wouldn't do for her. They went everywhere in Sally's van to include every restaurant in Tucson and Pinetop, all the time singing along with Mama Mia blaring from the van's speakers. Additionally our thanks are extended to all the wonderful caregivers at Catalina Foothills Extended Care Residence who cared for Sally after she moved there in 2011. For all who have asked if there is anything you can do for us, I would like to paraphrase words from Max which were in his mother's obituary. When you get a chance, hug your mom, dad, kids, spouse and every person you love. Tell them how much you care about them, for life is precious and fragile and we never know if that might be the last time they hear those words from you. It was Sally's wish to have her ashes distributed in a special place in Pinetop at a private family memorial. A party in Sally's honor will be scheduled at a later date. Upon attending U of A in 1956 Sally was one of the first classmates I met. She was so much fun-had a cute giggle, nice car, wonderful friendly mother, Mrs. Johnson, who always took myself and other classmates in to their cozy home to sleep-over for the weekend. They were so special in making us feel at home. Meeting her boyfriend, Hugh, was really good. He was wonderful to all of us out-of-towners. I have special memories that I will cherish forever. Hugh, you are one of a kind and Vik and I will keep in touch and continue our friendship. Love, Lucy and Vik Jackson

My memories of Sally go back to 1956 when we met at the U of A. Marilyn Wilbur and I arrived to Tucson from KS. Sally and her Mother were like family to us. Always so friendly, smiling and letting us "sleep over" so we could experience a Tucson home. Mrs. Johnson always provided us with wholesome good food before she left to run the family Johnson Drugstore. We loved to go the store-reminded us of KS. I will always remember her with her cute giggle and smile. Memories to cherish forever.Hugh, you are one of a kind and so very special.
Love, Lucy and Vik Jackson

Sally was a strong, funny, and courageous woman who was always smiling. I knew her 40 years and considered her part of my family. I'll never forget the time I moved to San Diego with her daughter and she visited us. I got lost on a job interview and ended up in Tijuana MX. When I returned home frazzled she said "at least you could have brought back a clay pot". I will always remember her. I am so sorry for your losses Hugh, Hughie and family, Sam and Max. I love you all and you are always in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Judy (Burkett) Brevaire
