Barney Aros Long time Tucson resident Barney Aros passed peacefully in the presence of family, friends on Sunday, November 10, 2013. Born and raised in Tucson in 1926, he is a third generation Tucsonan, 4th generation Arizonan, a descendent of a pioneer cattle ranching family (Antonio, Teofilo, Bernardo), which was situated near Sasabe, Arizona in the 1880's. He attended Roskruge Elementary and Junior High School in Tucson before moving to Coolidge, Arizona, where he graduated from Coolidge Union High School in 1944. He then enlisted in the Army Air Corp Pilot training program and met a pretty USO hostess, Joy Rowland, whom he married in 1946. They moved to Tucson and had three children. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joy; two brothers, Edgar, Walter and a sister, Norma; children, David, Diane and Susan; seven grandchildren, Mark, Eric, Melissa, Laurie, James, Jeffery, Christina and 14 great- grandchildren. He was always interested in Architecture and began his career in the building inspection department for the city of Tucson where he acquired considerable knowledge in construction and building codes and learned Architecture though self taught correspondence classes. He then was employed by the Terry Atkinson Architectural firm under many capacities from drafting to design to construction manager and eventually office manager. He became a registered architect and then began his partnership firm, engaging primarily on school designs for the Amphitheater district and managed this business until his retirement. During his career, he was president of the 20-30 club, Sertoma and Construction Specification Institute and won several design awards from the American Institute of Architects, and was an Emeritus Architect for the American Institute of Architects. Vaya con Dios, Padre.

Barney and I worked together for Bill Goldblatt remodeling schools in an office on Swan and Broadway many years ago. Barney wrote the specifications, managed projects and I did the drawings. Those were the golden days. I will miss Barney. He was a friend.

I'm so sorry to ready about Barney. I worked in my Father's office next door to the Atkinson office on Broadway many years ago. The architects walked by my window several times each day and we were friends. Barney was always very friendly and I saw him again a few years ago when he was working on a school building at Lulu Walker Elementary School. I was on the building advisory committee. He was such a nice man. I always liked him.
