Ravi DeFilippo Obituary

Ravi Lucas DeFilippo our gentle spirit, was taken from us on August 1, 2010 in a mining accident near Mount Toromocho, Peru. He was a native Tucsonan and cum laude graduate of Arizona State University who found his passion as a geologist. Ravi was our best friend; he was intelligent, thoughtful, hilarious and loving. A fierce CDO football and ASU rugby player, he was also a team captain, rock climber, world traveler and leader. He will be remembered for his bear hugs, his dance moves and his amazing advice. Ravi's kind soul, infectious smile and passion for life will forever be an inspiration to those lucky enough to have known him. He was, simply, the best man ever. He leaves behind his parents, Mary and Art; his twin Makko and new sister, Kathryn and his older brother, Wyan. His friends and family around the world – in Mexico, Spain, Chile, Australia and elsewhere – will keep him in their hearts forever. Nunca te olvidaremos, Ravi; siempre estarás en nuestros corazones. A Celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Oro Valley Church of the Nazarene, 500 W. Calle Concordia, Tucson, AZ. Memorial donations can be made to the ASU Foundation for the Ravi DeFilippo Geology Field Camp Scholarship. Checks can be sent to the ASU Foundation, School of Earth and Space Exploration, Attn. Ravi DeFilippo Scholarship, PO Box 871404, ASU, Tempe, AZ 85287. Arrangement by ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Avalon Chapel.

I would like to offer my condolences to the family. A common text, regarding the near future, that comforts me is "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. " I hope this brings you all comfort as well.

My son, my beautiful son with a smile that would light up a room, with a hug that would make me feel so special and strive to be a better dad. My heart is torn apart and I sit here in South Korea crying as I write these few words for me to see. I don't know how I go on working but being with children each day makes me smile and hug a lot-which makes me carry on some of your precious moments of life...you would always tell me you love me so much and that I was a great dad. What a gift you were to me..what a loss to the world now that you are gone. It's your bithday today and I cry like a baby. I often read this Minquass proverb that's next to your picture. It says that, "The soul would have no raibow if the eyes had no tears"...well my soul has rainbows everyday when I think of you. I will miss you always and try to carry on as if you were still here next to me smiling at me and hugging me. Love your Pops.

Little brother,
I was at the temple, yesterday, where you visited your mom and dad last year. Not a day goes by when I don't have you in my thoughts...monster hugs, smiles, and the dance moves. You've made a difference in each life that you've blessed. I'll miss you forever. Until I see you again...

Hi Mr. DeFilippo and family,

It's Paloma Ibanez, an old Keeling student. It was one of those almost mystical days that my mom and I came across your story. It really moved both of us. I remember seeing your twins at school, all the girls wished they went to Keeling too. Ravi is greatly missed, from his remembrance I know he had a fierce spirit. I hope that you find solace.
Love and Peace,
Paloma

I was on the elevator this morning and looked at a man’s id. His name was Ravi. I came back to my computer and saw I had just received an “New entry in the Guest Book of Ravi Lucas DeFilippo” email. I selected the link and read the new entries. Uncle Art – That was a beautiful story. I think he is looking after you all and letting you know it! I am sending my Arizona family all the love, warmth, prayers and strength I can. You are all often in my mind and my heart.

All my affection goes to Papa Art, Mama Mary, los hermanos Makko and Todd, and all your family and friends. A legend and a friend with us forever. Ravi will always remain the greatest inspiration to me and to everyone who knew him. His physical existence may no longer be with us, but his presence and influence is as strong as ever. Not a day has gone by where I haven't thought 'what would Ravi do?', and because of this, each day is a good day. The continuing list of tributes and messages that are written on this wall give clear evidence that I'm not the only one who thinks this, and the strength of the 'Ravi community' gives me great peace of mind knowing that Ravi's legacy will remain strong forever! My heart goes out to the entire DeFilippo family today.

I love and miss you dearly my son. One year has passed and my heart is still torn apart with pain. I will always remember your tenderness and love you had for me. And who could ever forget your sweet smile.

I went to a special ceremony today in a traditional Korean Buddhist temple. When I got off the subway it was raining so hard and I didn't have an umbrella. There was no way in that rain storm to make it to the temple. However, right in front of me on the sidewalk was a slightly broken umbrella. I picked it up and fixed it and made it safely to the temple. I would like to think that you were still looking out for me.

The temple was beautiful and filled with flowers, candles, many prayers, chants, meditations and thoughts of you. I gave your handsome picture to the monk and she will pray for you and our family.

My heart will never heal from the pain. I can only learn how to endure it until I die.

Love and hugs, Papa Art

We returned to Tucson with the news that your beloved son was taken by a mountain, led away past our eyes, into an exploration we know so little about. Chandra and I send our hearts out to you, believing that such a tragedy reminds us how precious life is and that each moment should be lived with profound gratitude that we are alive. Ravi, obviously understood this, and commited to all his passions in the fullest of intention. How clever of you to raise such a beautiful man.
Much love,

I remember when I was 20 and first met my 8 year old twin cousins. They were such loving boys to each other and to me. I was amazed by their closeness, intelligence, friendliness, and ability to love. I left that trip feeling love and admiration for my young cousins. Those boys were just so impressive at that age!

Aunt Mary and Uncle Art: ALL 3 of your sons are so amazing! They have grown to be friendly, intelligent, handsome and accomplished which is a true testament of your parenting skills. The few trips/reunions I have had with any of you has been so special to me. After every trip, I find myself bragging to all about my special, wonderful Arizona relatives. My Honey has too. I hope we are able to do half of the job, with our little Aiden, you and Art have done. I love and admire you all and I am sending all the strength and love I can to you.

Ravi - Your life and death will always have left a deep impression on me and clearly many others... some who have never even met you. I am sending love to you too! Watch over my Arizona family.

Over the course of the past week, I have been struggling to find answers. Why him? Why now? Why is life so unfair? I have come to realize that the answer to these questions I will probably never know. I do know, however, that I am extremely lucky to have known Ravi. I know that if there were more people that were half the man Ravi was, this world would be a better place. He is someone I admire and strive to be like. His fun-loving personality was contagious, and his sheer presence could light up any room. He had a way of making everyone feel like they were life-long friends, even if they had just met him. He was humble, modest, unselfish, and handsome. He was a true friend, and the definition of a family man. I have never heard someone speak so highly about anyone the way Ravi did about his family, especially Makko. Ravi was full of love, and everyone he encountered felt it.

Ravi taught me so many thing while he was here, and I am ever so thankful for that. He showed me not only the type of person everyone should strive to be, but to follow my dreams. He never let his dreams be dreams, and he never stopped dreaming.

My thoughts and prayers are with the DeFilippos and all of the people that had the pleasure of knowing him. I look forward to seeing him again in heaven.

Today's service was so beautiful, and I was not surprised to see all the seats were taken and people were standing in the lobby, unable to see what was going on, but still there to pay respect to a life taken too soon. While I did not know Ravi well, most my memories of him are from our time at Harelson, where I would pick on him and send my friends to bother him or annoy him; solely because I liked him. At the end of that year when he signed my yearbook, he was not rude or mean to me because I purposely drove him crazy, but he was genuinely nice, and that's how he always was.

Thank you for having such a beautiful service and inviting everyone who knew him to come celebrate his life. He was truly one of a kind.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

To the DeFilippo Family,
We were deeply saddened to hear about Ravi. As part of the Harelson family, we always had known of the twins- Ravi and Makko. When our daughter entered high school, Ravi was her link crew leader. As a link crew leader, Ravi served as an excellent role model and had a magnificent, warm, friendly way of easing the stress of a freshman entering high school. In fact, Ravi was such an inspirational role model that both of our children have chosen to be link crew leaders. We remember watching and cheering for Ravi on the CDO football field, as well as attending CDO’s first drug awareness night when Ravi sat on stage next to Mrs. Mary Swiderski and spoke about what it is like to be a teen confronted with the tremendous peer pressure to drink alcohol and do drugs. He spoke with confidence and pride as he shared many stories as to how he handled these tough situations. His words still ring in our ears. We often share his anecdotes with other parents and students. We remember thinking then that Ravi was wise beyond his years. Occasionally , we would bump into Ravi at a restaurant or store. Ravi was never too busy to say hello or to stop and chat as his infectious smile always exuded warmth and kindness. Ravi 's leadership, compassion, and kindness touched and inspired many over his short life. Our family sincerely hopes that the pain in your heavy hearts is lifted by the comfort of your many happy memories and knowing that Ravi will still live in the minds and hearts of others.

Dearest Art, Mary, Wyan, Makko and Kathryn~
We are broken hearted for your loss of Ravi. Ravi grew to be such a beacon of love, light and hope to so many in his short lifetime. My family remembers him as a smiling, happy, funny, lovable boy of three, four and five years old~and a special friend to Devin, along with Makko. God gave us Ravi for just a short time, however, his spirit will always be with every life he touched. You will always be in our prayers. May our beautiful Lord comfort you deeply in your loss. Love, Shri, Devin, Jon, Lorissa, Natali, Jennet and Jean Paul.

One of the last times we were blessed to see Ravi was at our house on Camino de Fosforo. He had just returned from rock climbing on Mt. Lemmon with Tommy Lavelle. Ravi's warmth, zest for life, energy and love were exemplified every time we saw him. In his life, all who knew Ravi were touched in a special way. We all are better people for having known and loved him.

Ravi,

Never in my life had I met or will I meet again somebody like you. You had a zest for life like no other. Your ability to radiate pure love and kindness to all walks of life was a gift that can only be described as purely LEGENDARY. Whilst we did not live in the same city- the memories that we were able to share together over the last few years are some of the happiest moments in my life and will be close to my heart forever. I will never forget the countless conversations we had together, time spent at ASU, a crazy few days in Las Vegas and the most recent an amazing ski trip with you and my family. Your automatic love for my brother Anthony and the special times you both spent together strengthened our close bond.
I will never understand why this happened. We had so many plans ahead of us. However, I and all those who knew you will have comfort from the love you gave and the awesome life lessons we have all learnt from your time on this world. I love and will deeply miss you. Rest in peace.

Besos,

Josh

Dear Art, Mary, Makko, Kathryn, Wyan and family:

Please accept our deepest sympathy on the death of your amazing son/brother, Ravi. We so appreicated the wonderful friendship that Mark shared with him and the closness of their group's bonded hearts of support and encouragement. His heart was kind and so friendly and he always had a huge smile . May the void that death brings be filled with joyful memories as you celebrate and honor his life. May you feel God's ever open arms wrapped around you tightly as they draw you close to His very heart of comfort - He loves you and is there for you. We pray you remember the good times and bask in the joy of what a special gift Ravi was to our community. "May the peace of God which transcends all understanding guard your hearts and minds"

God Bless You Abundantly,

Griebel Family
