June 6, 2013 I find it difficult to believe that Vern has passed away. Even though we were rarely in contact over the years, he and I knew that we remained good friends. I knew Barbara and Vern for some time before they were married, while we were all living in Benson, Arizona. In fact, Vern and I rented a two-bedroom “apartment” together (believe it or not, the apartment was one of several that had been newly constructed on the site of a fairly large chicken coop—but it was a lot nicer than the places which each of us had lived in before in Benson—a step upward—into a chicken coop.) We had lots of laughs there.
Vern had a terrific sense of humor. I recall the slightly sardonic letter that we composed and sent to the Editor of Time magazine concerning their use of the term “political tiglon” – it had appeared in a recent issue and we had tried without success (remember this was in the early fifties) to find the word in our dictionaries. I wonder if it's in Dictionary.com now. Vern probably looked it up at some time during the last fifty-odd years. We received a gently worded response from Time, advising us that it was a cross between a tiger and a lion...still mystifies me....
Anyway, Shirlee and I are so sad that he is no longer with you, Barbara and family. We are sure that he is in a better place now. We would love to have been there for the memorial celebration. Be comforted by the fact that he lived a wonderful life, and that your years together were almost all wonderful ones.
