I took Dr. Banttari's plant virology class and he was on my MS committee during the 1970s. His class was one of the best that I took at UM. Dr. Banttari was indeed very congenial as a professor, but very challenging. I really appreciated that. I also went on many trips with him and Dr. Anderson, my advisor, to the Red River Valley Potato Research Station in Grand Forks, ND. We had many interesting discussions while traveling there and back. I have very fond memories of those experiences.
I express my condolences to Dr. Banttari's family. He was a good person.

Prof. Banttari was on my Ph.D. Thesis Committee in 1985 and I could not have asked for a more patient supportive committee member. When I reviewed the final copy of my thesis with him before my defense, I was surprised that he had read the entire document and had detailed specific suggestions throughout. I really felt like he was a coach for my academic career and I am sorry to learn that he is no longer with us.

Marlene, Neil and I were so sorry to hear about Ernie. He was a good man and we're sure you miss him. Our deepest sympathies to you and your family.

I will always be proud of being Dr. Banttari's PhD student. His discipline, tenacity and exigency were great lessons in my academic formation. Although demanding, he was a kind and wise man. Our field trips to Grand Forks were a real-world experience to apply our lab techniques. I am glad I could visit with him and Marlene two years ago and all my thoughts are with Marlene.
