To the Draine Family, I didn't know Bob well, but the guys who work on the River are a breed of a different caliber. I can remember being quite young and scooting over the guard rail to go down to the "Mike" to see my Dad, and I remember the old days when the Riverfest was Riverfront Days with Frisbee playin the harmonica...the boat pushes and ultra light planes. The good ones like my dad and yours are gone but not forgotten...not by a long shot. The river it runs through my veins for its so much more than a job, its a history of my family and where we came from.
I had become lucky enough to work for Bob at Capital Barge in the late 70's and one day while I was cleaning up an old tool box of mine Bob came up to me in that very close manner that he had, grinned... then said Bim, you know you just can't go wrong buying tools or books that tell ya how to do things. Very important knowledge for me... Thank you Sir !!! God speed . See ya on the other side.
To the Robert Draine Family:
Bob was a longtime member of the waterway community, a professional mariner and a good friend. We are all deeply saddened by his passing.

To the Draine family: I am so sorry for your loss - and for our loss, too. Bob Draine was willing to help anyone at anytime. Without Bob's help in introducing us the people who built the IRON COFFIN, we never would have had our wonderful boat, TRUBADOR. I can just see Bob sailing a ship across the heavens!!
Draine extended family, I remember the day Bob hired me as a "green" deckhand in 1972, in the next 4 + years at Capitol Barge it went from intimadating boss, to teacher, to mentor, to life long friend. Robert still has an impact on my life to this day, as I still measure by Bob's standards, which maybe way to high in todays environment. I remember being at Bob's side in the engine room of the Mike Harris, him in a "lab" coat, "dip" in lip, "stethoscope" around his neck and "hippie half a glasses " on. - Smiling with\ at you Robert, You will be missed - Capt. Mike McReynolds
Shirley, Tim & Susan,
I'm so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. Bob was a big part of Bill's and my life. I'll never forget all the memories throughout the years. Bill and him are hashing over all the old times. He may be gone but he'll always be in your heart.

To the family: I grew up with "Chug" in Rushville. I recall him saying he was famous after noting I wrote about him in my first book, "The Last Decade of Innocence." After reading comments here, I can surely say he didn't need my words for his fame. So sorry of his passing. May he rest in peace.
Dear Tim and Susan
having never met you dad, it still amazes me how often i'm called on the radio and asked. Is that Bob Draine's old boat the RIVER RAT. and its not just tow boat pilots from the st paul area, its been tow boat pilots down as far as cairo, and marina owners that have remembered the boats name or knew Bob. So after about 6500 miles and many memories on the river, all i can say is thank you Mr. draine for a very enjoyable boat. i have had a blast
Tim and Family,
I met your Dad in 1972 on the river in St Paul when I worked for Pillsbury. He became a great friend and mentor for me over the years working in the St Paul harbor. My deepest thoughts and prayers are with you during your time of grieving. He was a good friend and a lot of fun. Great memories....please celebrate the great memories and fun times...I know I will.
Bob Draine had a HUGE impact on my life growing up....I spent more time at the Draine household than my own. Bob made you proud of who you were, I remember Tim shouting out his last name in football practice when called upon by Coach Ward, proud of who he was. Bob was a great role model for a young person, but was a terrible teacher - I flunked "gas siphoning" and "snuff chewing", never been more sick in my life. Many fond memories and laughs. I hope I go out the same way, with people remembering me like that.
To the Drain family,
I had meet Bob for the first time in 1965 on the bank of the Mississippi River and he always was a great person and river man. He will be missed by all.
We are so sorry to hear of Bob's passing and have many fond memories of his river wisdom and generosity. Sorry we can't be at the remembrance service.

Tim & Susan, Shirley and all the rest of your family. I only met Bob a few times but I remember he reminded me of my dad, always bigger than life. Even at our age, it hurts to lose a parent. God bless you, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Darlene Greenlee Royalty
I did not spend as much time with Bob as others did, but what I did know about him was very impressive. I really appreciated being able to run the river with him on those old tugs. It solidified my love and respect for the river and my admiration of the man who had logged thousands of hours navigating it's length. I was able to spend hours of time with him in the wheelhouses of those tugs, learning all about the infrastructure of the river system and gaining an understanding of everything he had contributed to in in the logistics industry of the river systems. From Bob and my own explorations I learned about the power of the river and the respect that it deserves. When My time comes to pass I hope to have my ashes scattered at the headwaters, so I can take one last ride.
Rest In Peace Bob

Tim So sorry to see your dad passing away. I remember the trips up to Brainerd for the races we took which I know he really enjoyed. Wow that was 20 years ago. Since then whenever he would see me on my tool route, he would always stop and say hello. You have my deepest sympathy.
Bob was a true friend and will be remembered in my heart
to I'm deeply saddened to read of Bob's passing and my heartfelt condolences to Shirley and other family members.
I am sorry to see the notice for your Dad. I only met him a couple times, but it was always memorable. Reading the obituary reminds me what an interesting man he was. Let me know if there is any thing I can do for you.
