Age 87 of St. Paul Passed away peacefully on 3/15/2014 Surrounded by his closest family, after a 12 year battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's - neither of which were quite able to steal his wonderful sense of humor. Preceded in death by parents, Irving E and Ada (Samson); wife, Lois (Griswold); twin brother, Irving and brothers, Ken and Warren. Ray was born March 13, 1927 in St. Paul, MN where he attended Central High School; and the University of St. Thomas. He served aboard several aircraft carriers in the US Navy during WWII. Ray worked at 3M for 35 years. He and his family spent many summers in Northern Minnesota on Washburn Lake where he enjoyed fishing for walleye, looking for agates, playing cribbage, and eating gigantic ice cream cones with his daughters, grandkids, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Ray was a proud member of AA with 40 years of sobriety; he supported and loved many people struggling with addiction over the years. Ray had a way of brightening the day of anyone he met - even in the end stages of his disease, he greeted everyone with a twinkle in his eyes and a huge smile. He had an optimistic outlook on life and was always claiming to be able to see " a little bit of blue sky" peeking out behind the clouds. Ray and his family are eternally grateful to the amazing care of the staff at the MN Veterans Home in Minneapolis. They treated Ray with the dignity and respect all people deserve and took such wonderful care of him until the very end. Ray is survived by daughters Cindy Richard (Paul Renner), Laurie Kasel (Larry); grandchildren Eric Vong, Kari Vong (Eli Ljung), Bret Kasel, Andrea Kasel; and great -granddaughters Gretta and Elsa Ljung. I'll never forget ray and Lois at Washburn lake insisting that the night was right for a little skinny dipping. What fun. Sad to see Ray has left us.
