John RICKEY Obituary

Age 90 Of Shoreview Retired architect and Director of Marketing Medical Facilities, Ellerbe Becket Architects died July 20, 2014. Preceded in death by parents John and Amelia Rickey and daughter-in-law Cynthia Rickey. Survived by wife , of 68 years, Virginia; sons, John and James (Karen); daughters, Joanne (Rick) Dubiel and Jilleen Hodges; grandchildren, Ricky, Rory and Stephanie Dubiel, Matthew, Kristin, and Joseph Rickey, and Thomas Hodges; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Tyler and Emily. John joined the US Army Air Corp. and served for three years during WWII as a radio operator/gunner on a B-24 liberator bomber flying over 25 missions in the European theater. John and Virginia were married on October 24, 1945. Soon afterward he was discharged from the Air Corp. and took a job at Ellerbe while attending the University Of Minnesota. Upon completion of school, John became a Corporate Member of the Minnesota Society of Architects and the National Institute of Architects. He advanced from a Project Architect to the Associate Director of Medical Division and then to the position of Marketing Director of Health Care Facilities, which he continued in until his retirement from Ellerbe Becket on December 31, 1986. Throughout his work life and afterward during his retirement years, John served in an official capacity for the American Legion, Shoreview Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Gargoyle Club of St. Paul, St. John the Baptist Men's Club, VFW St. Paul and Ellerbe Emeritus. John also enjoyed history, golfing, fishing and restoring classic cars. John passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital, one of many he designed. Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM Thursday, July 24 at ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH, 835 - 2nd Ave NW. New Brighton. Interment St. John's Church Cemetery. Visitation at MUELLER-BIES FUNERAL HOME- ROSEVILLE, 2130 N. Dale St. at Co. Rd B from 4-8PM Wednesday and at the church from 10 -11 AM Thursday. MUELLER-BIES 651-487-2550

My dad, Chuck Watson, was a golfer with John in their senior years. I have been a neighbor of John's for many years. John was a great friend for my dad and a great neighbor for me. Sandee Rysgaard

Sorry to learn about the passing of Mr. Rickey! I did learn a lot from his dottling on the cocktail napkins at both the Legion and Sunday morning breakfasts - not sure it was always the right thing through - LOL He was quite a character. RIP Mr. Rickey, you will be missed.
