Mary Slaughter Obituary

Mary Kathryn (Perry) Slaughter, born Nov. 8, 1961, passed away peacefully on Oct. 4, 2004 at Mendocino Coast District Hospital in Fort Bragg. She was surrounded by her loving family and many friends. Mary had been battling breast cancer for nine years and now is pain free in the house of the Lord.

Mary was 42 years old and lived most of her life in Ukiah. Mary is a graduate of Ukiah High Schools' "Class of 1979." In January 2001, she and her husband Mike, became partners of Sport Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge and relocated to Fort Bragg with their family. Mary was employed at the Community Development Commission in Ukiah for 20 years and eventually went into property management at Plaza Del Sol, also in Ukiah. Mary recently accepted the position of executive director for the South San Francisco Housing Authority, however she was forced to retire due to her illness in March of this year.

Mary was a proud participant in both the Ukiah and Fort Bragg communities. She will be remembered for her love of family and friends, her love of participating in and supporting her children's athletic abilities including softball, basketball, cheerleading and football. She'll also be remembered for her never-ending devotion, love and support for her husband of 26 years, Michael E. Slaughter. Mary and Michael first met and "fell in love" when she was 11 and he was 13. They always felt their union was a blessing from God. Two beautiful children came from this marriage, Mindy Marie, age 18, and Matthew

Michael, age 16.

Mary is survived by her husband, her beloved children and her mother, Patricia Knight of Ukiah. She was predeceased by her father, Frank Perry. She is also survived by her brothers, Michael Tobin of Willits, James Perry of Ukiah, and Stewart Hobson residing in Texas, and her sister, Tina Perry of Ukiah, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Chapel by the Sea located at 445 E. Fir St., in Fort Bragg at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 8. A funeral procession will follow to Russian River Cemetery on Low Gap Road in Ukiah where a brief graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Immediately following there will be a celebration of Mary's life at the home of their good friend Ken Fowler.

Memorial contributions can be made to the "Mary Slaughter Memorial Fund" at the Savings Bank of Mendocino County.

Not sure what to say?

Aunt Mary,
I have been wanting to write a message in this guest book for a very long time, but I could never do it. As October 4th is coming near, I find myself think of you more and more. I wear your gold heart locket every year on your birthday, to help me remember. I want you to know what a wonderful influence you had on my life. You were the type of wife and mother everbody wanted to be. I will always remember your kind and gentle way. You were my favorite aunt and I miss you terribly. I thank God that I had a chance to have you in my life.
Love always,
Karaboo

Mary was my best friends mom. Mary was everyone's dream mom. She was there for me when my family was not. I remember when I was a freshman i had to write a paper about success. I wrote that paper about Mary. Mary was a kind, beautiful, funny and a completly unforgettable person. She inspired everyone that she met. I am deeply sorry for your loss Mike, Mindy and Matt. We all loved her. She will finally be able to rest now.

Mike and Mary were our neighbor's for many years at several locations. Mary and I raised our children and our husbands together! She had a never ending pantry....there was nothing I could ask to borrow that she didn't have, and if she was out of something she bought 3 for next time, just in case! I will never forget our impromptu dinners. Mary was probably the kindest, most patient, positive person I have ever known. Her children are a constant reminder of her character. I am so proud to have known her and her family. Mike, Mindy and Matt....know that we will always be there for you. We love you very much!

I will remember my Aunt Mary for her beautiful smile, her laugh, and her love for our family. She was so wonderful to me, even as an adult my favorite place to visit is my Aunt Mary and Uncle Mike's house. There was always tons of family and friends and lots of food there. Mindy, Matt, Melissa, and I would play for days at Aunt Mary's house. Uncle Mike and Pops would have the game on and Aunt Mary would be doing laundry or picking up. It is one of my safe places, a comfortable place to go and have as many huges as I want. I will cherish every memory I have with my Aunt Mary. Uncle Mike, Mindy, Matt I love you.

Mike, Mindy and Matt: What a touching service you had for your dear mom and wife, she would have been proud of all of you. I still haven't been able to read your poem Mindy and Matt the bell was awesome! As a grandma and a mother I am very proud of all of you both. Mike, you were a tower of strength to your beautiful wife, I am so very proud of you also.

Mary was a great lady with a huge amount of courage, there are not very many like her. She is someone to look up to even if she was many years younger, she will be an inspiration to me. I am particularly happy that my family, Donna, Tim, Lindsay and Tom became a 'family' to you all. Love to you all!

PS Matt, I am still a bacon cooker... if you are ever in Manchester feel free to stop by and I'll cook some up for you.

Don't grieve for me, now I'm free,

I'm following the path God laid for me.

I took his hand when I heard him call.

I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love to work or play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way,

I found that peace at the close of the day.

If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy.

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, ah yes these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with time of sorrow,

I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.

My life's been full, I've savored much.

Good friends, good times, and undue grief.

Lift up your heart and share with me.

God wanted me now, he set me free.

To the family of Mary:

I pray for God's comfort in your time of sorrow

When I think of my mom, i think of her lovely smile, her bright eyes, and her big heart. She was a truly amazing woman. She is my hero because i know if i can be half as wonderful and great as she was, then i will live a wonderful life. I miss her very much but i know she is dancing with the angels now, and I know she will always be with me. I miss my mom, she is my best friend.
