Louis Farley Obituary

HAMPTON - Louis Ferdinand Farley Jr., 81, of Singer Island, Fla., and Hampton, N.H., died Oct. 21, 2016, at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., due to complications from surgery.

He was born in Manchester on Feb. 10, 1935, the only son of Louis and Philomene (Forbes) Farley Sr. He attended St. Patrick's School and was in the first graduating class of Bishop Bradley High School. He graduated from Manhattan College in New York and went on to obtain a Master's degree in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University in 1970.

He also served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era.

As a member of the NH Department of Public Works, he designed bridges throughout the state. For most of his career, he worked for the Department of Water Supply and Pollution Control (now part of the Department of Environmental Services). He retired from the State of New Hampshire in 1999 after 40 years of service.

Mr. Farley served many years as a coach at South Little League and devoted countless hours coaching and serving on the MRYHA Board of Directors. He was the founder of the Manchester Youth Hockey's travel team, the Flames. He also coached youth basketball and was president of Cub Scout Pack 118. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, Ancient Order of Hibernians, and American Legion.

Lou was an avid reader of military history and maintained a library of hundreds of books on the subject. He was an aficionado of military memorabilia, especially swords, field knives, and combat helmets, and accumulated an extensive collection during his life.

He was "Lou" to his beloved wife of 58 years, Joanne (Kelleher) Farley. He was "Dad" to his three sons, Michael Farley, who resides with his wife, Cathleen, in Manchester, Kevin Farley of Candia, and Daniel Farley who, along with his wife, Linda, also lives in Manchester. He was "Grumpy" to his seven grandchildren, Megan Baxter, Brian Farley, Liam Farley, Timothy Farley, Kelly Laplante, Colin Farley and Ciaran Farley; and to his four great-grandchildren, Justin Farley, Cayce Farley, Jameson Farley, and Brooke Laplante. He also leaves one nephew and several cousins.

My conversation with Lou today. Lou we think of you often and miss you. As I noted last year, Joanne, Kathy and myself continue our travels returning from a summer road trip all the way to Colby Kansas and everything in between. We have four trips planned for 2023 and I wish you were with us although you are with us in spirit. Until we chat again next year may God continue to keep you in his loving arms.

It's been five years but seems like almost yesterday. Lou is very much missed and Lou would be thrilled with the little travel club Joanne, Kathy Gorman and myself have formed. Would have been nice to have Lou around for the rides. Miss you buddy :)

Dear Joanne, Kevin, Dan, and especially my old friend Mike:

I was truly saddened to hear of Lou's passing. He was a man's man. Cool without even trying. I learned three things from Lou.
1. Every guy needs a man cave. Lou had one before they were called man caves.

2. Interstate overpasses can be built without median supports for people to crash into, and the world can thank Lou for helping design them.
And lastly, when you're 15 years old, never, ever go to a rock concert in Boston after Lou said not to.
Deepest heartfelt condolences from my family and I to you all.

Dear Joanne and family, I am so very saddened at Lou's passing. Lou was a great guy who was there for anyone that needed help. Lou got thru the many storms that came his way and just rebounded and smiled and moved on. God must have needed a very special person to take Lou from you and your family and friends.
God Bless the Farley Family.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
