Marge lived in the neighborhood for over 55 years, 18 of which overlapped with my time next door. Upon moving to Rome, NY in 1980, my parents became so close to their friendly next door neighbor Marge and her husband Ed that when I came along in 1984 my parents eschewed the tradition of asking blood relatives and selected them to be my godparents.

She was a fixture in my life even more than any of my grandparents. When I was little, she would babysit me, play games with me, watch cartoons with me, and take me out to eat. When I was a teen she would come over nearly every summer day for a swim in our pool and was always there for me when my parents started working the night shifts. She was there at my graduation and when I starred in the school play and never once forgot one of my birthdays. Once I left home at 18, every single trip home involved a trip to go sit in their den and catch up.

Marge absolutely adored her 4 children, 6 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was devoted to her husband of well-over a half century, who passed away in September 2016. She worked in the school system for many years, but was retired by the time I knew her. She faithfully went to church every Saturday evening and never had an ill word to say about anyone.

She was the best godmother, surrogate grandmother, neighbor, and friend I could have ever asked for.

This is the last picture of us together and I will treasure it always.

I am heartbroken, but I am also thankful. I am thankful that her suffering is over. Thankful that my life was so enriched by the presence of her unconditional love for three and a half decades. And thankful that she and Ed are together again, just as it should be.
