Schorr, John Emil SANTEE -- John Emil Schorr, 60, formerly of Santee, CA loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cigar aficionado, award- winning chili cook and rabble-rouser went to be with the Lord the morning of Thursday, March 19, 2015. The eldest child of John and Marilyn Conlan Schorr, John was born September 16, 1954, on Long Island, New York. He would eventually be big brother to six siblings and the growing family moved to Columbia, Maryland, where John graduated from Glenelg High School in 1972. Having lost a beloved uncle in Vietnam, John immediately enlisted in the USMC upon graduation. John's parents had rejected his multiple attempts to enlist prior graduation. As luck would have it, in 1976 his family resettled to San Diego and John was able to join the family caravan traveling west as he was assigned to Camp Pendleton. There he served as an engine mechanic spending most of his time working on OV-10 Broncos. John always recalled his military service with high reverence and the friendships and experiences he had there would last a lifetime. After leaving the Corps, John worked at Northrop Grumman in Hawthorne, CA before moving to Rohr Aircraft Corporation in Chula Vista, CA in 1979. Always farsighted, John juggled family and work schedules to attend National University and receive a B.S. in Law. When the aerospace industry took a downturn in 1993, John pursued a career with the San Diego Sheriff's and Probation Departments, from which he retired in 2007. During that time John pursued and achieved his lifelong desire of obtaining his private pilot license. John always had a passion for the outdoors, enjoying trips to Mexico to hunt pheasants and doves with his brothers Jim and Daniel. He also loved camping in Anza Borrego and backpacking on Mt. San Jacinto with friends and family. While visiting his wife Cheryl's family in 1998, John fell in love with Michigan's Upper Peninsula (U.P.). In 2005, they purchased a 40-acre camp that they would call home every August for their annual Camp "What-A-Life" barbecue and every October for hunting. The long drive from Southern California to the U.P. was always greatly anticipated and was the source of many "boondoggles," as he put them. Having established a base for his outdoor adventures, John soon found himself the owner of a 25-foot Boston Whaler and spent as much time as he could trolling Lake Michigan in search of king salmon. His first buck would come in 2009, though the antlers where much smaller than he thought and John threatened bodily harm to anyone who dared to take a picture. When John wasn't on some outdoor adventure, it was a safe bet you could find him on the back porch of his Santee home with a cigar and a cold beverage, tending to his smoker or barbecue. John took great pride in his cooking and specialized in large cuts of meat that he cooked and smoked to perfection. Their home was always open to friends and family where they hosted many family gatherings, Fourth of July in particular was one John's favorites, allowing him to showcase his cooking prowess. He would inevitably become the center of attention with his animated storytelling, quick wit, and-more often than not-his healthy dose of sarcasm - Hey Mugsy! John is preceded in death by his mother Marilyn. He is survived by his wife Cheryl (Casey) Schorr, sons John, Michael and Matthew, father John Erwin (Beverly) Schorr, siblings Deirdre (Rick) Stafford, Joanne (Bob) Kambe, Jim (Rosanna) Schorr, Daniel (Manju) Schorr, Marcella Schorr, MaryEllen (Brian) Stevens and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. A service celebrating John's life will be held at the East County Mortuary, 374 N Magnolia Ave, El Cajon, CA 92020 on Saturday, March 28, at 2:00 p.m. In light of the fact that John was a staunch conservative, never silent on a political issue and always had to get the last word in on a debate, we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
