I first met Ray in 2000, on a trip to Kona, Hi, with his daughter Elena.

Ray invited me to have breakfast with him at his favorite little restaurant where he knew everyone and they were all happy to see him.

I forget what Ray ordered for breakfast, but I ordered scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast.

Halfway through our meal, Ray set down his fork, placed his hands on the table, and got a very serious look on his face. I became worried when he said, "Mike, may I ask you a serious question?"

"Of course you can," I said.

Ray said, "Mike, do you know the difference between being involved and being commited?"

Well, immediately I was thinking that this question was directly related to my relationship with his daughter, and I was pretty sure that I was not ready to have that conversation with him, since we had just met.

I played dumb and just said, "No, Ray, I'm not sure I do."

Ray sad, "Well, just look at your breakfast -- the chicken was involved, but the pig was committed!"

I realized then what kind of sense of humor Ray had, and we both had a good laugh at my expense.

Such great memories of this fun and energetic guy who was our father. I have seen pics of him climbing coconut palms like a native! Will post one if I can find it. I think of him and of his savvy so often . . . . We were lucky to be raised by his example.

Ray and Ruth Lair were great friends to my parents in Salem for which I am forever grateful. I have wonderful memories of Ray, especially his entertaining stories when visiting him in Hawaii. He was truly one of kind.

How lucky we feel to have known Ray. We know the world was a better place with Ray in it. Always a great friend with an ever present joyfull and optimistic outlook. Our condolences to Ruth & the Lair family.
