Jardine Clifton Bloom, 81, a distinguished Navy officer, passed away on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2012 in Williamsburg.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Heritage Humane Society, 430 Waller Mill Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
Mr. Bloom was born on August 4, 1931 to Merle W. and Velda L. Bloom in Dallas, TX. Following graduation in 1949 from Kankakee High School, Kankakee IL, he spent one year at the University of Illinois before enlisting in the Army at the outbreak of the Korean War. While stationed in Japan, he met his future wife, Mariko Ogawa of Tokyo. They were married on November 17, 1952. Upon completion of his enlistment in the Army, he was honorably discharged in 1953 as a Sergeant and returned to the University of Illinois to complete his studies, graduating with a BS in Marketing in 1956.
In 1958, he joined the Navy as a Supply Officer, attaining the rank of Commander before his retirement in 1981. His duty stations included the USS BLUE DD-744, the Long Beach Naval Shipyard, the Naval Air Facility Naha, Okinawa, the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School where he earned a MS in Management, Electronics Supply Office in Great Lakes, IL, the U.S. Naval War College in Newport RI where he graduated from the Command and Staff course, Fleet Activities Sasebo, Japan, the Navy Supply Systems Command Headquarters in Arlington, VA, the Navy Supply Center Norfolk, and Commander Service Group Two. He continued to support the Navy as a consultant until fully retiring in 1987, at which time he and Mariko settled in Kingsmill.
In their retirement, Clift and Mariko enjoyed traveling the world and visiting their children, who are both now retired Naval Officers, and their four grandchildren. Clift was a member of the Williamsburg Lions Club and enjoyed bird watching from the rear patio of his Williamsburg home.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mariko O. Bloom of Williamsburg, VA; his brother, John L. Bloom of Portsmouth, RI; his two children: Charles C. Bloom of Williamsburg, VA; and Vella M. Bloom of Fairfax, VA; his four grandchildren: Andrew S. Bloom and Caroline Y. Bloom-Heathcote of Fairfax, VA; Kyle C. Bloom of Norfolk, VA; and Ryan E. Bloom of Arlington, VA; as well as his two great-grandchildren, Carson B. Bloom and Penelope G. Bloom of Norfolk, VA
