Dear Kathy and Jake,

To you both and to Ben's wife Linda, we extend our deepest, heartfelt sympathy for the tragic loss of your son, Ben. We feel the depth of your sorrow and grief as we too have lost a precious son.

Although we may not have personally met, our sons were very close friends. We are the parents of Paul (known to many as Lolly) Lawton. After Paul died, many of his musician friends recorded the CD "Great Stuff" a compilation of songs that Paul had written. Ben was one of the musicians who featured on that CD and was the main vocalist in the song "Sha-na-na".

At that time we wrote to Ben personally, thanking him for his participation. Ben wrote an extremely touching letter back telling us how much Paul had meant to him, how he treasured his friendship and how very much he missed him.

We understand that Paul's drums are to be used today for the celebration of Ben's life.

As we write this message of condolence to you, there is no doubt in our minds that Paul and Ben are now together; friends reunited and making beautiful music in Heaven.

Chris and Matt Lawton,
Chester, Cheshire, England.

I'm overwhelmed with sadness as I type this. I knew Ben from junior high school in Victoria and always considered him a very good friend. His positive energy and spirit were so good for me. When I was having a hard time at home as a teenager he was there for me as a friend and helped me more than he may ever have realized. We did lose touch later in our adult lives but I always thought of him and I'm so happy to know that he got to live so many of the dreams he had as a teenager. It sounds like he touched many peoples lives in the same way he touched my life. I try to take some comfort in knowing that Ben lived such a happy and fulfilling life but it doesn't make it any easier to say goodbye.

Ben was a magical being. Full of life, compassion, generosity and humour. Just a real strength and a pillar in his community. I had the pleasure of meeting him and Linda a year and a half ago...we had a great night of joke telling...I liked him instantly. I have fond memories of his 40th Birthday, a group of us sang until 5:30 in the morning. I feel blessed and my life has been touched after meeting Ben. With deepest caring for Linda and Ben's Parents. Not an easy time.

I worked in the health industry and always looked forward to visits from Ben and Matt.
Ben was always the gentleman and so hospitable no matter what. Always a smile and the words to match. My sincere condolences to Matt and to everyone that shared Ben's life.

We saw the newspaper coverage of this sensless and tragic event in the Toronto papers and recognized the last name from Toronto Island. Its not a common name but we were hoping there was no connection but only today learned from Lorne Jones that it was in fact Jake and Kathy's son.

Jake and Kathy, you are still remembered fondly by many "old" Islanders and our hearts go out to you in this awful time. He certainly looked like a "chip off the old block".

I send my deepest condolences to Ben's wife and family. I have not seen Ben in a few years but have such fond memories of him. We have suffered a great loss within our community and our lives. I read one quote "a true renaissance man" Agreed

My thoughts and prayers go out to Ben's family and the Tallgrass team in your hour of need. The industry has suffered a great loss and we will always remember Ben with a fond heart and a gratefulness for his generous spirit. We could all aspire to be the kind of person Ben was to all of us...take what you have learned from him and pass it on. Honoring his memory is sharing what you learned from him.
