Paula and family, I was shocked and deeply saddened today when I heard this news. I worked with Chris back in his Cedars-Sinai days, managing his media interviews. What a tragic loss for your family, for the medical community and for the many patients and families he helped. My heart is with you.

I was told of Chris's death today by a good friend Dr David Reid who was also a good friend to Chris. I recall we all hunted on horseback in Princeton 35 or more years ago, on several occasions. I'm sure there are few men who could match Chris's achievements in Life and my condolences go to his wife . There has passed just a very good man who has helped hundreds and hundreds of people.

Chris, rest in peace. You were such a talented person with such a variety of interests. I remember great times together in Los Angeles and having you visit us in New York.

Although now years ago, I very much enjoyed working with Schack with our fledgling Liver Transplant program here at VGH. Those were heady and challenging times! I very much enjoyed those early cases and espirit d'corp offered by the Surgical Leaders. Chris was a joy to work with and contributed to the successful program we have now. My thoughts are with his family and friends. David Nash VGH Perfusionist

Paula and family, when I received the news I was shocked, Chris was such a Great guy and one of the most intelligent people I have ever had the privilege to know, I always called him for heath advice, love to talk about aviation, his family, father and what all of the kids were up to, I share in your deep loss and will always miss Chris.

I spent many hours in the Shackleton homes in North Vancouver, as Deborah was my friend. Seeing this photo of Chris, I see their Dad. Their home was always filled with warmth and wonder and I clearly remember Chris' own energy and warmth as a young boy. One just knew he would go on to make great contributions to this world, and clearly he did. I was saddened to learn of his passing at such a young age. My heartfelt condolences to the whole family, in particular those who touched my own life, Leona and Deborah.

Dear Paula and family,
Our truly heartfelt condolences on the loss of your beloved Chris. He was simply a remarkable human who always set the bar. He will be missed, but never forgotten. Hoping in some small way, knowing that you have the love and support of so many, will help to sustain you through this most difficult time. Sending love

My dear Paula,
I am shocked and so sorrowful for the loss of such a wonderful man, the love of your life! Chris was one of my mentors and he had a special place in my heart. I was so fortunate to work side by side with him in Liver Transplant. He was an incredibly talented surgeon and physician. His incredible career was just a piece of his soul as a human being, father, husband and friend. I will forever have a beautiful picture in my mind of the Thanksgiving he spent at my house when he was on call for Transplant and couldn't be with you all. He carved the turkey (as a good surgeon should)! I will miss him and he will always be in my heart, as will you and your family! I pray for peace and comfort in the weeks to come and send my love. May God wrap you in his loving arms and carry you! Love, Kristi Butenschoen
