I have great childhood memories of the Fitzgerald family as my father worked John and my mother was friends with mary im so sorry to hear this news. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will love you and miss you always.
John, I'll miss you forever. You were the funniest, best natured man I've ever known on the Sheriff's Department. Always loved your infectious smile and whooping laughter!! Nobody could work a room like you did. Thanks for all the fond memories.
One of the most decent, honorable, self deprecating, brightest, and happiest men I've ever had the honor to know. John always made those around him feel like they were the focus of interest. I don't ever remember him putting himself
first , not once. He was a great ambassador for Christ. He lived his conviction, I can't think of a greater accolade. Our
deepest sympathy to the family who lost a wonderful guy!
John, we miss you and your addicting smile. Countless memories of good times remain with me forever.
May our Lord provide loving support to John' family and watch over us all until we meet again.
First met John while working Main Jail Classification. Enjoyed his humor and common sense. John had a great career and made many friends, both on and off the department. Sorry for your loss, Sheree. John will be missed...RIP
Sheree and family...May you find comfort through God during the loss of such a special person. Just reading the guest book tells it all...a man of God and special beyond words... I thank you Sheree foxr allowing me to do your flowers and the program for the memorial. I have known you for many years being a dear friend of my sister, Jeanne...You and John have been so kind and generous to Mom.
I love you like a sister. God will give you the comfort and strength you need. Peace be with you.
Our Love, Diane and Jim Ellis
Thank you John for teaching all of us to work in a very serious carrer, without taking ourselves to seriously. You arte a mentor of the highest degree and I am sure you will be recieved with honnors. Rest in Peace my friend.
My thoughts and prayers go forth with John's family. John was a mentor and a friend since the days of the Ojai Police Department where John trained me, to our time as detectives where John trained me some more. What an incredible laugh and love for life. I will surely miss him. Thanks for everything John.
My condolences, to John's entire family. I know John and his brother Dennis as good friends and partners of my mom. I don't think I ever was in a room with John and didn't laugh... Out loud! I remember he and my mom came by our house during a call out, my mom left the room and John jumped on a stair climber and started talking.. I suddenly felt like there should have been a two drink minimum.. At 14, not many adults were funny, but John was. He was always bringing laughter and smiles to peoples faces. Rest in peace John.
John was a delightful friend, a great cop and a true gentleman. While I am saddened by his passing, I can't help but smile when I think of John. It was a blessing and great honor to have known him.
My condolences to Sheree and to John's family. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
My deepest condolences to Sheree and the rest of John's loving Family. I worked with John in Major Crimes and remember his smile and cheerful attitude. John was a mentor and friend. He will be missed!
Debbie and I have known John since he worked at the old Ojai Police Department. Debbie was a dispatcher there and I was a young Patrol Deputy working out of fire station 22 in Meiners Oaks. We were close friends whether backing each other up on calls in the Ojai Valley or "Choir Practice" after hours at the Gaslight restaurant. Over the years, our careers paralleled each other from Patrol, to Custody, to General Assignment Detectives to Major Crimes allowing us to keep working together. John was a great friend and a great investigator. His smile will be missed. Rest in peace my friend, you've earned it.

A wonderful man and a great partner to work with. Always laughter when working Fitz!
Great memories! My condolences.
I always looked forward to working with John. His smile, laugh and positive attitude was contagious. He always made the worst conditions so much more bearable with simply being there. I can hear him now saying with his usual enthusiasm, "Hey,do you know what?" John, you will be missed by all whose lives you touched.
Our deepest condolences to Sheree and the rest of John's loving Family. John was a funny, great guy to be around! He will be missed!

When "my amiga" first told me she went sailing and was introduced to a mutual friend, Sheree had bright gleem in her eyes and sly smile on her face. Thank you for bringing love into my friends life. Until we met again, and I hear our Lord say "well done good and faithful servant." Love Deb L.
A Great Man of God, a teacher, a true hero! Sgt. Fitzgerald will be missed by many of us. God Bless all his family and friends and let them find comfort in their hours of need.

Fitz, it was a pleasure knowing you, and working with you back in the day... that great sense of humor sure lifted us over the hump from time to time...Godspeed, my friend
I will remember John always as a sweet, funny and gentle man with a love for others and a heart for God. One day we will meet again in heaven, can't wait to see you in perfection John. My thoughts and prayers go out to Sheree and the rest of the Fitzgerald family.
An academy partner co-worker but most of all a friend. Your smile had a way of making people feel at ease during the toughest of times. Rest in peace my brother.
We both had the honor of working with John when he was a sergeant in the Sheriff's Major Crimes unit in the 1990's. Then many years later Melinda also had the honor of attending church with him and Sheree at Faith Community Church, and really enjoyed knowing him as a brother in Christ.
God bless Sheree and the family.
Friend, supervisor, mentor, gentleman, crime fighter, professional! John - you always kept things in perspective and your sense of humor was so disarming when others were ratcheting up the stress bar… You left a lasting impression on so many, with class and dignity :) Rest in peace old friend, you are one of the good guys who wore the tan and green so proudly.
Sheree - I am so sorry for your loss, but hope the many good memories you had with John help you with your grieving
Sheree. I am delighted that we were able to get to know John for the short time we were at FCC. We have kept you and the family in prayer and will continue to do so. We are so sorry we can't make it to the memorial service. Helen Proctor ( Nina's
Mother in law) passed away, her memorial is on Saturday morning also. We send our Love to you at this time.
I only met you a hand full of times as a child but I will never forget you or your beautiful family. I am sad to find that you have gone but am glad to know you are no longer in any pain. I send my love Pastor Dan, Michelle, Joseph and Jonathan
We both worked with John at the Sheriff's Dept. We grew close to John and Sheree after we were all retired. John was a very spiritual man, with a great sense of humor. He used to tease Maggie about "spending the night", when she brought her pillows to the Cancer Center for treatment. :) All the staff at the Center had nothing to say but good things about John and Sheree. He was a good man who will be missed by all who knew him.

I first met John when he was a Senior Deputy at the Ventura County Jail and I was employed by the Probation Department. We were tasked by our respective employers with setting up a Work Release Program to be operated out of the Work Furlough Facility. I last saw him at the Honor Farm shortly following his promotion to Sargent. Although many years have gone by, I've never forgotten his good natured sense of humor and easy going manner. My sincere condolences to his family for their loss.
Rest in peace John you will be greatly missed. Sorry for your loss Dan, Cathy Sheree, and the rest of his family. Terry and I loved his stories he told Terry and Barb Allison
Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.
I mourn the loss of a wonderful, funny, friendly guy. A good friend and a good golfer. He will be missed by all.
One of most exceptional persons I've ever had the privilege to meet....your smile, contagious laugh and wittiness will be missed.....but never forgotten!
We will miss your smile, Arnie and I are so glad we met you through Sheree two wonderful people. Love you
Arnie and Wanda Abitabilo, Florida
I first met John in 1962 when I went to Work at ABEX Corp. in Oxnard, John and I were good friends along with Mary and the Kids, and did many things together over the years until we left Calif. in 1974. He will be missed for sure. God Speed John,
Your faith has carried you to where there is no pain or suffering John. What a blessed man of God. As Paul said, "to die is gain", rest with Jesus my friend.
Until We Meet Again
I had the honor and pleasure of 'first' meeting my Sgt. Fitzgerald while I was a new Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Ojai Honor Farm in 1984-1987. Everyone loved him! How could you not, right! I hadn't seen John since 1987 when I left the Honor Farm to assume my patrol duty at the East Valley Station. And, subsequently went to work for the California Dept of Corrections John was the type of person one never forgot, his great sense of humor, his handsome face, his compassion, his character....so 26 years have passed since I last worked for this great man when on November 1, 2013 (his birthday) destiny placed me smack next door to his BEAUTIFUL wife Sheree, Zoey, and John! I was their new neighbor and given the opportunity to have my life touched by John again, even though so very, very briefly. I kept seeing Fitzgerald pop up when I was attempting to set up my Internet and I wondered....Could it be my Sgt Fitzgerald Well, soon enough I got the pleasure of discovering it really was him! He was outside on his driveway with his grandchildren (I think) and I said: hello, did you work for the Sheriff Dept.? And the rest is history. He had not lost his great sense of humor as after I told him he still looked the same, he replied: "I had hair back then" a few days later, my dog Toto had her six puppies and John got to see them all piled up in the basket
As we headed out to the vet. I will never forget how he asked me if it was ok to touch the puppies, that was so sweet. Those puppies were touched by an amazing man!! I am so very blessed to have met Sheree and Zoey, Sheree is a beautiful woman, inside and out
I admire her strength and grace that she ALWAYS displayed throughout this very difficult time of Johns terminal illness. Sheree, I am so sorry for your loss and to John: until we meet again..........
Denny and family, I rode with John many times while a reserve officer at Ojai Police Department in the late 70's. He was always accommodating and had just a great sense of humor. What I appreciated more was his open relationship with Christ. That had an impact on me throughout my career. Many happy memories of working with John.
I am so sorry to hear of 'Sgt Fitz' passing. John was one of my first sergeants at the Honor Farm when I started back in '86. His smile and laughter were contagious. John seemed to always have an unusual or funny 'take' on life and it's subjects!
