I grew up in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn & attended the same schools as Vincent, St Joseph's & Bishop Loughlin, but knew him only slightly, just to say hello. As a youngster, he played Cowboys & Indians on Cedar St. with my best friend James Gerardi. He always impressed me as being creative, non-conformist & a free spirit. I have an indelible memory of seeing Vinny bonding down the stairway at Bishop Loughlin, singing a Joan Baez anti-war protest song, an odd & inspiring sight for this kindred spirit. He had his first acting success at Loughlin in the title role as "the Man who came to Dinner", years before Cuckoo's Nest, Taxi, Ghost & many other great performances. Vincent was a true renaissance man: actor, author, chef. His excellent book "Bruculina, America" has become a family favorite (a great gift for any occassion). Recently I saw a wonderful documentary DVD about Vincent's retirement in Polizzi Generosa, Sicily, a beatiful town where my cousin Amedeo Aiosa was born & still visits regularly. The DVD was filmed probably a year or so before Vincent passed away, but he still has great wit, charm & joie de vivre. Respectfully, Richard Mangiaracina.

For Vincent...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Love ya Vinny
September 27, 2008
I attended Bishop Loughlin with Vinnie. I have to tell those who aspire to be actors that Vinny didn't have it easy. When we attended the Christmas Plays at Loughlin, Vinnie got some "major" hoots. Yes, many cheered but Vinny overcame so many obstacles to have gone on to major accomplishments. That's what has to be told and remembered. Look at Vinny for inspiration and never, ever
feel you can't be successful!

One of my biggest regrets was missing the chance to meet you. I saw you walking down the street but I wasn't brave enough to approach you. I wish I could have given you a kiss and a hug and asked for your autograph but being a shy person, I let this chance slip through my fingers. I will always miss you. I will always love you. Rest in peace, gentle soul. xx

Vincent and I were great friends in the '60's and '70's.
I am so sorry to hear of his passing.
I send my regards and love to him and his family.
We both lived on East 6th street back then; my place was between 1st and 2nd Ave., his between 2nd and 3rd.
I am happy to have been friends for those years.
Love to all,
Fran.
