Mrs. Ballew was my 6th grade teacher ar Midway Elementary in 1973. The year I had her my father was diagnosed with lung cancer and had to have surgery to remove his right lung. She asked me each day in class how my father was doing and if I was doing okay. At the time I thought she was "nosy" but as I grew up I realized what an amazing person she was to care enough to ask. My father did well and came to work at the school in the janitorial/maintenance department until his passing in 1995. He never forgot Mrs. Ballew and always spoke highly of her even after her retirement. Mrs. Ballew and I exchanged Christmas cards for many years after my graduation and I always enjoyed her cards and notes. As it turned out, she was the best of them all. She taught me so much in the year she was my teacher. One thing we had in common was our love of animals. She was feisty with a gentle touch. I will never forget you, Mrs. Ballew.
