ALAN STOKELY Obituary

STOKELY ALAN L. STOKELY (Age 91) "Red" Passed away peacefully at home the morning of December 14, 2016. Alan was a member of the "greatest generation." He was born in 1925, grew up during the Great Depression, and served with distinction in the Navy, in the South Pacific theater, during WWII. He completed college on the GI Bill, with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nebraska. (He later completed a law degree at Georgetown University.) He worked for Armstrong Contracting and Supply and its subsidiary ACandS for 40 years. He and Helen Sargent Stokely enjoyed almost 65 years of laughter-filled marriage as they raised their four children. He is survived by his wife, Helen; children, John (Susie) Stokely, Ann (Rob) Baker, Jayne (John) Hench and Paul (Sarah) Stokely; four grandsons, John, Charles, Galen and Liam; great-granddaughter, Anna; his sister, Renee and his brother, Harry. He was predeceased by brothers, Charles and Paul and grandson, Christopher. Alan was a devout Catholic, attended Mass daily after he retired, and served as a lay reader for many years. Inspired by the selflessness and generosity of St. Francis of Assisi, he studied with the St. Mary of the Angels Fraternity and made his Profession as a Secular Franciscan with a commitment to Francis' way of spiritual life. Alan was a blessing to his family who adored and admired him for his example and faith. Over the past weeks, family stayed with him daily and through the long nights, a testament to the dedication his own acts inspired. On Monday, December 26, visitation with the family will be in the chapel of Riderwood Retirement Community on Gracefield Road in Silver Spring, MD at 10 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 27 at 1 p.m. at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, MD. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. Mary of the Angels Fraternity, c/o Carmencita Fiesta, OFS, 2541 Glenallan Avenue, Apt. 102, Silver Spring, MD 20906. www.COLLINSFUNERALHOME.comwww.COLLINSFUNERALHOME.com

I am blessed to have been able to call him Uncle Alan! From the day we met, he made me feel welcome and a part of the Stokely family! He was a beautiful person who will be greatly missed!
I keep remembering something he said to me a few years ago (referencing my husband), "...someone named Alan Stokely can't be all bad!" It makes me smile.
My deepest love and sympathy to you all and a big hug from SD!
