Betsey Surmeier

Betsey RAE Surmeier (Age 78)  
Passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2015, at her home in Kensington, MD after a long bout of illnesses. Betsey was born October 26, 1936 to Ralph and Florence (Rusinow) Dettling in Detroit, Michigan. She graduated from University of Michigan and then received her teaching credentials after studying at the University of California, Berkeley where she met her future husband, John. She was married to John Surmeier in 1962 and moved to Bethesda, MD. Betsey worked at Research Analysis Corporation until she became a mother. After her children grew-up, Betsey went back to school to learn computer programming. She was employed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a programmer and worked there until she retired in 1994. Betsey's husband, John; daughter, Jacqueline; son, Ken; daughter-in law, Dawn; and children, Joe and Kathryn; an aunt, Sylvia; cousins, Norman and David; and numerous nieces and nephews survive her. Betsey was preceded in death by her parents. Relatives and friends may call at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 4900 Strathmore Avenue, Garrett Park, MD, on Thursday, August 6, from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.; where the Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD.
