As a young Navy Fireman under CAPT Johnson's command in 1984, he taught me one thing that has made me successful throughout my 30 years of Naval Service... "Can Do!" The Seabees often use it, but I always believed he coined it! He taught me the meaning of Commitment!
Fair winds and following seas skipper, the Captain had a stellar Naval career. Thoughts and prayers to the family.
Mike Hickey, Aux 1 USS Downes FF1070
Captain Johnson was the kind of man who through his own dedication inspired many young, green "sailors" to reach inside of themselves and perform tirelessly tasks that we didn't realize were within us. A stern but fair man and one hell of a C.O. His Knowledge of Naval Weapons Systems . Gunnery especially, earned the first Battle E for the USS DOWNES (FF1070) in 1978. Two more followed in '79 & '80. The Old Man loved his gun shoots. We couldn't keep the magazines full enough. Heaven has the gates protected now. You're remembered well by many Cap. GMG2 Rick Schroerlucke USS DOWNES 1977-1980
I will remember you, and your family in our prayers sir.... You were one of the best !
So sorry to see the Skipper has passed on. I served aboard the Downes under him with pride. Fair Winds and Fallowing Seas Skipper
My deepest condolences.
I was just looking up some old shipmates, and discovered this, in this case.
I served under Captain Johnson aboard the USS Downes. I was an Electronic Warfare Technician and Leading Petty for OE Division. I was proud to serve with him. He was the kind of commanding officer that inspired confidence in his men.
Very sorry for the loss of such a great man to the Johnson Family. I will always remember this man with such happy memories of being my CO on the USS Cape Cod. Rest in Peace, Sir.
RIP to a great commander. I served with him aboard the USS DOWNES FF1070. Was like a father to me. Always was very thoughtful to his men. Fair Winds Commander. I really wish I could attend service but I am currently taking care of my 88 year old father. Would appreciate any momento from him for my navy scrapbook...God Bless.
My thoughts are with you. He was exceptionally brave.
We are so sorry for your loss
OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILY. I WILL ALWAYS CHERISH THE MANY GOOD TIMES WE HAD GROWING UP. WE DIDN'T SEE EACH OTHER VERY OFTEN BUT THE TIMES WE HAD TOGETHER WERE GREAT. I'VE LOST A GREAT COUSIN WHOM I LOVED AND RESPECTED.
I am so sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in family, friends and prayer (Psalm 65:2)during this difficult time.
