Robert will live forever in our hearts.

I will always remember the name Robert Joseph Hess ever since I did the color guard for the memorial service at Robinson High School. I did not know Robert personally but he is a role model for all of us.

I just recently learned of the death of your son, Robert, in Afghanistan. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

I went to ODU for two years (80-82) and remember how passionate and serious you were about flying. You must be so proud of the fine young man he became.

Bob:
I know you won't remember my name, but I was in the ODU ROTC unit with you in '79-81. I only recently read the ODU Monarch magazine and discovered the memorium to your son. I wanted to let you know how sorry I am for such a devastating loss. You must be so proud to have raised such a wonderful son willing to serve his country to the full measure--just as you were. No words can ease your pain, but I offer heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

I didn't know RJ well, but I was a member of the Cavalier Battallion at the same time he was and a co-captain of Lake Braddock High's swim team at the same time he was captain of our rivals at Robinson.
I cannot tell you how sorry I am for your loss, I am proud to have known RJ even a little. He was a great man and a great American. We will never forget his courage.

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Robert will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I'm home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I'm only a civilian
And I don't even know if it's allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn't make it home.
I know you're in God's presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

I Salute You.

We will send our gift as soon as possible. Also, if you know of any other families who are grieving the loss of a loved on who died while serving our country, please pass along my e-mail address. Bob and Laura,
Losing a child, no matter how old they are, just isn't supposed to happen and being a member of the parents-who-have-lost-a-child club is not something I would ever wish on anyone. Please know that the numbness you feel at this moment will ease, a bit, with time. In the meantime, don't be afraid to mention RJ's name around friends. Don't let him become the "elephant in the room." Just some advise that helped me from a classmate of TJHS '77. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
May 04, 2013
Dear Bob, Laura and Patrick, you all are in our prayers. Please know that we are thinking of you and praying for you all and RJ. We are so sorry.

Bob, Laura and Patrick,
RJ is our local Hero and will always be remembered! The Gulacs are keeping you close to our hearts. Every time I place that American Flag in front of my house, I will be thinking of RJ.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to 1LT Robert Joseph “R.J.” Hess our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for “R.J.”. And to “R.J.” it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the supreme sacrifice he made for his country while deployed to Afghanistan with the U.S. Army. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. “R.J.”, you gave the last full measure of devotion for what you believed in and fought for. You are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to “R.J.”'s family and loved ones.
